Music mogul Simon Cowell, now 66 with an estimated net worth of £450 million, reflects on his extravagant spending habits from his early success days. Known for launching hits through shows like The X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent, as well as bands such as One Direction and Little Mix, Cowell admits to once throwing money around without a second thought.
Podcast Revelations on Lavish Expenditures
During the launch of Jamie East’s podcast Tales from the Celebrity Trenches, Cowell recounts a peculiar incident where he shelled out £2,000 to check into London’s Mandarin Oriental hotel just for a bath after his home boiler failed. Laughing off the memory, he confesses, “I might have done that. You know what? I pissed away so much money in hindsight.”
Cowell explains his shift in mindset: “I do think about that now, like ‘my god.’ I’m a bit more cautious these days. I didn’t have much money to start with, so when I began making a lot, it felt fantastic. But now I wonder, ‘Why did I spend all that?'”
The Infamous 50th Birthday Party
East, 52, probes further: “Does that mean you’re not going to spend another three million quid on a birthday party featuring burlesque vaginas?” Cowell looks guilty and replies, “Absolutely correct. By the way, I didn’t know it was going to cost that much—I really didn’t.”
He recalls the shock of the bill: “When I got it, I think I’m still paying for it now. Honestly, I couldn’t believe it. I was like, ‘What? I didn’t agree to that.'” Cowell admits he barely remembers the event, having taken half a Xanax beforehand. One vivid memory stands out: his mother seated next to a vicar, horrified by the performers. “She’s like, ‘What’s that?’ And I said, ‘I think it’s a mouth… the wrong way around.'”
Persistent Financial Concerns
Despite his fortune, Cowell reveals ongoing money worries: “I still worry about money actually, because I know what it feels like when you have absolutely nothing.”
