The Star Entertainment Group, Australia’s largest publicly listed casino operator, has announced a fourth-quarter loss of $8 million for the fiscal year 2026. This financial result, while still a loss, represents an improvement compared to the $27 million loss before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) recorded in the same period of the previous fiscal year. The company’s ongoing negotiations with regulators over licensing issues and a decline in gaming table revenue have continued to impact its financial performance.

Financial Performance and Revenue Trends

For the full fiscal year ending June 30, 2026, Star Entertainment reported a two percent decrease in revenue, bringing the total to $265 million. The primary driver of this decline was the performance of its flagship property, The Star Sydney. This iconic casino and entertainment complex experienced a downturn in both gaming table revenue and non-gaming revenue streams. However, this was partially counterbalanced by an increase in revenue generated from gaming machines at the Sydney venue.

Impact of Regulatory Changes in Sydney

Significant regulatory changes implemented at Star Sydney since October 2024 have had a notable effect on revenue. The introduction of mandatory carded play, requiring players to use a card to access gaming machines, and a daily cash limit of $5,000 have contributed to a 20 percent drop in average daily revenue, according to company statements. These measures, imposed by the New South Wales government, are slated to remain in effect until August 2027. The Star Sydney’s casino license itself remains suspended.

Licensing Challenges Across Star Entertainment Properties

The regulatory pressures extend beyond Sydney. Star Entertainment’s Gold Coast casino is also facing uncertainty. In 2025, the Queensland government decided to defer the suspension of its license until September 30, 2026. Furthermore, the Queensland government has extended the tenure of an external advisor overseeing Star Brisbane until the same date. These ongoing licensing issues underscore the complex regulatory environment in which the company is operating.

Company’s Stance and Historical Context

A spokesperson for Star Entertainment stated, “The Star continues to engage with regulators and government in respect of the… casino licences.” This indicates an active effort by the company to resolve the outstanding issues. The company has been navigating regulatory scrutiny since 2021, when investigations were launched into potential violations of anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing laws. These historical investigations have cast a long shadow over the company’s operations and its relationship with regulatory bodies.

Market Performance

In light of these operational and regulatory challenges, shares in Star Entertainment were trading at 12 cents. The company’s ability to regain profitability and navigate its licensing landscape will be critical for its future performance and investor confidence.

Conclusion

Star Entertainment Group is currently navigating a challenging period marked by financial losses and significant regulatory hurdles. The company’s efforts to improve its financial standing are being hampered by ongoing licensing negotiations and the impact of new regulations, particularly at its Sydney and Gold Coast properties. The resolution of these licensing issues and the company’s ability to adapt to stricter regulatory frameworks will be key determinants of its future success.
