In a shocking road rage incident, brave bystanders attempted to pull a driver from his white Volkswagen after he allegedly struck a 15-year-old boy on an e-bike in Sydney’s affluent North Curl Curl suburb on Monday, April 27.

Sequence of Events

The altercation began when the driver made a rude hand gesture toward a group of teenagers riding e-bikes. The teens followed the car, leading to a verbal argument between the driver and the 15-year-old boy.

During the confrontation, the driver threw a water bottle at the teen. The boy threw it back but missed. The 15-year-old then pursued the vehicle and blocked it at an intersection. Authorities state the driver accelerated, striking the boy and throwing him from the e-bike before fleeing the scene.

Part of the crash was captured on camera, alerting New South Wales Police to the incident. Officers arrested the driver about an hour later in nearby Dee Why.

Witness Account

A local woman named Laura described the chaos while driving near Abbott Road. “We were just driving down around the corner onto Abbott road and saw a car fully up on the curb. We stopped because we were like, someone has been hit,” she said.

She noted the passenger door opened and slammed shut as the driver swerved away, nearly striking her vehicle. Bystanders reported the driver had thrown a bottle at the e-bike riders, who returned it, prompting him to veer off the road and hit the boy.

“The boy’s legs were badly damaged and bleeding, and the bike was badly damaged,” Laura added. “E-bikes are sometimes annoying, but you would not run someone over. That could have gone so much worse.”

Victim’s Injuries and Response

The teen suffered serious leg injuries. Paramedics from NSW Ambulance stabilized him at the scene before transporting him to Randwick Children’s Hospital. No airlift was required.

Driver Faces Charges

The suspect faces charges of driving furiously in a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, negligent driving, and operating a vehicle while his license application was refused. He received bail and is scheduled to appear in Manly Local Court on May 20.
