Victoria Police are preparing to interview five players from the Sydney Swans Australian Rules Football Club as part of an ongoing investigation into an alleged sexual assault. The interviews mark a significant development in the probe, which centers on an incident reportedly occurring at a Melbourne hotel in August.

Investigation Details Emerge

Detectives from Victoria Police’s Sexual Crimes Squad are expected to travel to Sydney to speak with players Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, Nick Blakey, Riley Bice, and James Jordon. These players have reportedly denied any criminal wrongdoing, and no charges have been filed in relation to the allegations. The investigation is understood to focus on events that took place at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park hotel during the early hours of Monday, August 17. Police are reportedly examining a two-hour booking that allegedly involved three adult entertainers.

The booking is said to have occurred following the Sydney Swans’ victory over Essendon at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). All three women who attended the hotel room have since alleged that sexual assaults took place during the booking. They have reportedly engaged civil lawyers to represent them.

Player Representation and Allegations

Prominent Melbourne criminal lawyer Tony Hargreaves has been retained to represent the five Sydney Swans players involved. While Isaac Heeney has been reported as a focus of the investigation, it is also understood that another player may be questioned under caution regarding their alleged actions within the hotel room. One of the women involved has stated that nine men were present in the room during the incident. Former AFL player Taylor Adams was also reportedly with the group earlier in the night, though his presence at the specific time of the alleged assaults remains unclear.

Witness accounts suggest that one of the women was ejected from the room and subsequently locked out. She later reportedly encountered Sydney Swans coach Dean Cox in the hotel foyer as the team was preparing for breakfast and their departure for the airport between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. Coach Cox, along with other senior Swans officials, has voluntarily provided witness statements to the police. These officials include head of football Leon Cameron, communications manager Tom Chadwick, and head of wellbeing and development Brett Kirk. None of these officials were reportedly inside the hotel room during the alleged incidents.

Club Sanctions and Finals Implications

In the days following the incident, the Sydney Swans club suspended Heeney, Warner, Blakey, Bice, and Jordon for the remainder of the season. The club stated that these sanctions were imposed for breaches of team rules, specifically related to players staying out late, consuming alcohol, and bringing guests back to the team hotel. The club emphasized that these suspensions were separate from the sexual assault allegations and did not constitute findings of criminal misconduct.

The ongoing investigation casts a shadow over the Swans as they prepare for a crucial qualifying final against the Brisbane Lions. The club, which finished second on the ladder, is aiming to reach its third Grand Final in five years but will be competing without the five suspended players. The absence of these key players has led to speculation about the team’s vulnerability. Former AFL coach James Hird expressed his view that the team’s chances against a strong Brisbane side are significantly diminished due to these player absences.

Team News and Preparations

Despite the off-field distractions, the Sydney Swans are also managing player fitness ahead of the finals. Key forward Joel Amartey is nearing a return from an Achilles injury, and Hayden McLean is expected to be cleared after completing concussion protocols. Midfielder Justin McInerney is also working to overcome a hamstring issue. Team selections are anticipated on Thursday night.

Investigators are expected to compile all available evidence and may seek guidance from the Office of the Public Prosecutions regarding the potential for securing convictions. The Sydney Swans organization has declined to comment on the latest developments in the police investigation.

Conclusion

The impending interviews with five Sydney Swans players represent a critical juncture in the Victoria Police investigation into alleged sexual assault. While the players deny any wrongdoing and no charges have been laid, the probe continues to develop. The club’s internal sanctions and the potential impact on their AFL finals campaign remain significant talking points as the team prepares for its upcoming matches.
