Navigating the ever-evolving world of teenage slang can feel like deciphering a foreign language, especially with the rapid pace at which new terms emerge and fade on platforms like TikTok. Younger generations have always developed unique ways of speaking, from the distinct lingo of the 1960s to the catchphrases of the 1990s. However, today’s youth lexicon is accelerating at an unprecedented speed, making it a challenge for parents to keep up.

The Impact of Social Media on Language Evolution

A study published in the New England Law Review highlights how social media platforms, particularly TikTok, contribute to a “rapid evolution of language.” This environment allows new words and phrases to gain popularity, become widely used, and then fall out of fashion almost as quickly as they appeared. The phenomenon is exemplified by terms that, like the “6-7” gesture, can surge from niche internet memes to widespread use by public figures and then become obsolete within a year.

Madeline Enos, a language trends expert at the language learning app Preply, observes that “for parents, it can feel like the dictionary changes every week.” She notes that school holidays can further accelerate this trend, as young people spend more time online, absorbing and then integrating the latest expressions into their daily conversations. Understanding some of these key expressions can significantly ease communication and help parents avoid those awkward moments when their child has to explain a seemingly nonsensical phrase.

Key TikTok Slang Terms Parents Should Know

Quiet on the Creek

Popularized by artist Saucy Santana, the phrase “Quiet on the Creek” involves repeating the words in a hushed tone. While its initial viral spread on TikTok was partly fueled by users deliberately withholding explanations, making it an exclusive inside joke, its underlying meaning is straightforward. It functions similarly to “keep it on the down low,” advising someone to maintain discretion or keep a matter confidential.

Crash Out

When someone says they are about to “crash out,” it doesn’t refer to sleeping. According to Enos, this phrase describes a situation where an individual is on the verge of losing their temper, overreacting, or experiencing an emotional breakdown. While the term has roots in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) slang, dating back perhaps a decade and recognized in academic journals, it has recently gained traction among younger audiences in the UK, serving as a modern replacement for terms like “tantrum” or “meltdown.””

Tylenol Babies

This term emerged from satirical social media content following a controversial White House press conference. The administration’s unsubstantiated claims linking Tylenol (acetaminophen) use during pregnancy to autism sparked widespread mockery. Some autistic individuals and parents of neurodivergent children began using “Tylenol babies” humorously or affectionately. However, like many viral phrases, its meaning has shifted, and it is now sometimes used as an insult for individuals perceived as overly sensitive or unable to accept criticism.

Corny on the Bob, Off the Bob

Described by Enos as one of TikTok’s more unusual phrases, “corny on the bob, off the bob” is used to call out hypocrisy or a change in behavior depending on the audience. While many repeat it for its amusing sound, its origin is surprisingly wholesome. It stems from TikTok creator Patty Miller’s playful term for sweetcorn. “Corny on the bob” refers to corn on the cob, and by extension, the phrase implies someone acting differently when they are “on the cob” (in a certain situation or with certain people) versus when they are “off the bob” (in a different context).

NPC

In the gaming world, NPC stands for “non-player character,” referring to the background characters controlled by the game’s programming. In real-world slang, Enos explains that “NPC” describes someone acting in a robotic, predictable, or unoriginal manner. It’s often used as a lighthearted insult for individuals who seem to be merely following the crowd without independent thought, suggesting a lack of individuality.

Cooked

If someone states “I’m cooked” or “it’s cooked,” Enos clarifies that it signifies a situation has gone significantly wrong or is beyond repair. The severity can range from academic failure or a poor sports result to simply having an extremely difficult day. The context and tone dictate the level of seriousness, but the core meaning points to a situation being irrevocably damaged or failed.

Aura Points

“Aura points” represent an informal scoring system for an individual’s
