Fans of gripping thrillers and true crime series should tune into The Sixth Commandment, a compelling four-part BBC drama now streaming for free on BBC iPlayer. This acclaimed production delves into the real-life murder of teacher Peter Farquhar and the suspicious death of his neighbor Ann Moore-Martin in the Buckinghamshire village of Maids Moreton.

Cast and Filming Locations

Veteran actor Timothy Spall portrays Peter Farquhar, with Anne Reid as Ann Moore-Martin and Éanna Hardwicke as manipulative student Ben Field. Filmed primarily in and around Bristol, the series showcases locations such as Blaise Estate, Flax Bourton Mortuary, South Bristol Crematorium, and Circomedia on Portland Square, which doubles as a church. Additional scenes appear in Bath, Clevedon, and Keynsham. Production received backing from the victims’ families.

The Disturbing True Story

Originally airing on BBC One in 2023, the drama examines Farquhar’s death and the extensive gaslighting, physical, and mental abuse he suffered. It traces how Farquhar’s encounter with charismatic student Ben Field sparked one of modern history’s most complex criminal cases. Concerns over Field’s relationship with the devoutly religious Ann Moore-Martin uncovered shocking details, leading to a thorough police investigation and trial.

Viewer Acclaim on Rotten Tomatoes

Audiences on review site Rotten Tomatoes rave about the series. One viewer calls it “the best thing I have watched on television,” praising “faultless acting, perfect script and completely enthralling.” Another declares it “the best drama for some time,” noting “wonderful acting; unbelievable directing; superb writing.”

Lead performances earn high marks, with a fan stating: “5 star acting… awesome, fabulous, yet chilling acting from all actors, especially Timothy Spall.” A five-star review highlights “a gripping plot, amazing acting and cast. Near perfect.” Viewers describe it as capturing “incredible suffering and incredible evil.”

The Sixth Commandment streams now on BBC iPlayer.
