A man described as “caring and kind” has died after being assaulted on a Central Line platform at Liverpool Street station while returning from the Notting Hill Carnival. Thomas Jewitt, 32, was attacked on the evening of Sunday, August 30, and passed away in hospital three days later. His heartbroken family has paid tribute to him, remembering his fun-loving nature and bright future, which included plans to marry his fiancée next year.

Tragic Attack Following Carnival

The incident occurred around 10:51 pm on Sunday, August 30, when police were called to reports of a serious assault on the Central Line platform at Liverpool Street station. It is understood that Mr. Jewitt had been attending the Notting Hill Carnival in west London and was making his way home when the attack took place. He was taken to the hospital with critical injuries but sadly succumbed to his wounds.

The family of Thomas Jewitt released a statement expressing their profound grief and disbelief at his sudden death. “We can’t believe that Tom has been taken from us. Tom was fun-loving, caring and kind. He always looked out for others and made them feel better,” they shared. They highlighted his successful career in affordable housing and the promising future that was tragically cut short. “He was excited about marrying his fiancée next year,” the statement continued. “Tom is deeply loved by his family, his many, many friends and his work colleagues. We will draw what strength we can from the wonderful memories we have of Tom.” A photograph of Mr. Jewitt smiling on holiday was released by his family.

Investigation and Charges

British Transport Police (BTP) are leading the investigation into the fatal assault. Detective Superintendent Sam Blackburn stated, “First and foremost our thoughts are firmly with the loved ones of the young man who has sadly died. They are being supported by specially trained officers as our investigation continues.” He added, “We continue to appeal to anyone who saw what happened and has not yet spoken to police to come forward and assist our investigation. Any piece of information could be vital to us.”

In relation to the incident, Jeremiah Maximo, 38, of Drydock Square, Barking, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm. He was scheduled to appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court. Following Mr. Jewitt’s death, the BTP announced they would apply to amend the charge to reflect the fatality. Mr. Maximo is now expected to appear in court at a later date.

Context of the Notting Hill Carnival

The attack occurred during the August Bank Holiday weekend, which marked the 60th anniversary of the Notting Hill Carnival. This year’s event, a vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture in London, is estimated to have attracted between one and two million attendees over its two days. The carnival is a significant cultural event, drawing large crowds to the Notting Hill area and surrounding transport networks.

Detective Superintendent Blackburn previously confirmed that “the victim was travelling back from Notting Hill Carnival at the time of the incident,” underscoring the connection between the event and the tragic loss of life. The BTP has emphasized the importance of public assistance in piecing together the events that led to Mr. Jewitt’s death.

Remembering Thomas Jewitt

Tributes have poured in for Thomas Jewitt, painting a picture of a dedicated professional and a cherished individual. His family’s statement emphasized his positive impact on those around him, his commitment to his career in affordable housing, and his personal happiness, particularly his impending marriage. The loss is felt deeply by his extensive network of family, friends, and colleagues, who are drawing comfort from their memories of him.

The investigation continues as police seek to understand the full circumstances surrounding the assault. The BTP urges anyone with information, no matter how small it may seem, to contact them to aid in their pursuit of justice for Thomas Jewitt and his grieving family.
