Brits are shifting their summer holiday preferences away from traditional seaside entertainment, with Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s extensive arcades no longer a top draw. While these indoor hubs of flashing lights and familiar jingles have long offered affordable fun and a chance for a small wager, often providing a welcome escape from unpredictable weather, a new ranking has placed them outside the top 20.
Southend-on-Sea Claims Top Spot
A recent analysis by Live Casinos, which compiled a comprehensive list of the nation’s best seaside arcades, has highlighted Southend-on-Sea as a leading destination. The town boasts not only the country’s longest pier but also highly-rated arcade offerings. Other seaside locations making a significant impact on the rankings include Minehead, Scarborough, and Cardiff.
The release of this list coincides with a period of warm weather, with temperatures expected to reach the mid-30s Celsius in some regions. For those planning summer excursions, the areas featured in the top 20 are reported to be excellent choices, offering a wide array of attractions.
Astro City Leads the Pack
Among the standout venues, Astro City and Wellington Pier were noted for their strong performance, attracting visitors with their diverse game selections. Ultimately, arcades in Southend-on-Sea and Great Yarmouth secured the first and third positions respectively.
The evaluation criteria for these arcades focused on the total number of games available and the variety of game categories, which were used to generate a percentile score for each establishment. Astro City in Southend-on-Sea achieved the premier position with 56 games spread across 11 distinct categories, earning a rating of 9.85. This placed it just ahead of the Golden Horseshoe in Southsea, which secured the second spot.
Customer Testimonials Highlight Success
Reviews for Astro City reflect its leading status. One visitor shared on TripAdvisor, “I had my son’s 8th birthday party at Astro City & they went above and beyond there to make sure his party was perfect. The man who owns the venue (think his name is Riya) is the nicest person. We cannot wait to come back for the Friday & Saturday night time slots. Highly recommended.”
Another patron commented, “Such a great place for kids to play all different types of arcade games and also the adults get to have a go. We’ve been a few times now and my little one absolutely loves it.” These sentiments underscore the appeal of arcades like Astro City to a broad audience, catering to both younger visitors and adults seeking nostalgic entertainment.
