A trainee barrister, Isobella Perrie Sullivan, 25, was arrested near the Northern Ireland border in County Monaghan, Ireland, on suspicion of involvement in a suspected New IRA operation. Authorities seized a sophisticated, military-grade explosive device from the vehicle she was allegedly driving. The device is described as potentially capable of causing significant damage and is considered one of the most advanced bombs discovered since the period of The Troubles.

Trainee Barrister’s Background and Arrest

Sullivan, from Clane, County Kildare, appeared before Trim District Court in County Meath on Friday, facing charges of possession of explosives. Her legal representative, Gavin Booth, informed the court that Sullivan had previously been associated with a “political group” and had spent time in Syria. However, Booth emphasized that Sullivan had since distanced herself from such activities to concentrate on her legal studies and aspirations to become a barrister.

According to reports, Sullivan, who reportedly goes by the name Perrie, was a recent law graduate from ATU Donegal. Her solicitor stated that she was allegedly asked to transport a bag without knowledge of its contents and suggested she may have been “manipulated.” The defense also conveyed that Sullivan’s parents are deeply distressed by the events and would ensure she adhered strictly to any bail conditions, including close supervision.

Judge Raymond Finnegan granted Sullivan bail on the condition of a €15,000 (£12,800) independent surety. Additional bail terms included surrendering her passport and observing a strict curfew. She was reportedly wearing a pink hoodie at the time of her court appearance.

The Explosive Device and Wider Investigation

The arrest occurred during an intelligence-led operation conducted by the Garda Síochána’s Special Detective Unit. The vehicle was stopped on the N2 road, south of Carrickmacross, an area approximately six miles from the border with Northern Ireland. A man in his 40s was also apprehended in connection with the investigation. Reports suggest he is believed to be a member of the New IRA’s Dublin branch.

Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly addressed the media at a Garda graduation event in County Tipperary, confirming the “extremely significant seizure” of the explosive device. He described it as a fully constructed bomb, not merely components, and reiterated its potential for substantial damage. Commissioner Kelly highlighted that the operation was not random but based on prior intelligence, though specific details could not be disclosed for operational reasons.

Kelly also commented on the ongoing threat posed by dissident republicans who reject the Good Friday Agreement. He characterized these individuals as a “small minority” of “radicalised republicans” and stated that An Garda Síochána, in close collaboration with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and UK intelligence services, remains committed to countering this persistent threat.

Official Reactions and Context

Ireland’s Minister for Justice, Jim O’Callaghan, described the seizure as “very worrying.” The PSNI’s Assistant Chief Constable, Davy Beck, affirmed a “joint commitment” between law enforcement agencies on both sides of the border to combat the threat from dissident republican groups.

The incident underscores the continued presence of militant activity in Northern Ireland. Despite the peace agreement reached nearly three decades ago that largely ended sectarian violence, sporadic attacks, including attempted bombings, by dissident groups persist. The location of the arrest, Carrickmacross, is strategically situated near the border, a route often associated with such activities.

Sullivan’s Past and Legal Proceedings

Details emerging about Sullivan’s past, including her time in Syria and alleged association with a political group, add a complex layer to the case. Her lawyer’s assertion that she was unaware of the bag’s contents and had been “manipulated” suggests a defense strategy focusing on her alleged lack of intent or knowledge regarding the explosive device. The court’s decision to grant bail, albeit with stringent conditions, reflects the legal process now underway.

The investigation continues, with authorities focused on dismantling the networks involved in such activities and preventing future attacks. The collaboration between Irish and UK security forces remains crucial in addressing the evolving threat from dissident republican organizations aiming to disrupt peace and stability.

The seizure represents a significant success for law enforcement in intercepting a potentially devastating attack. The focus now shifts to the legal proceedings against Sullivan and the ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in these activities.
