The Iconic After-Party Kiss That Sparked Rumors
A passionate kiss between Grease co-stars Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta at the 1978 film premiere after-party at Paramount Studios fueled widespread speculation. Fan magazines circulated photos of the moment, prompting questions about whether the on-screen couple shared a real-life romance.
Years later, in 1983, the pair appeared hand-in-hand on Joan Rivers’ show, drawing thunderous applause. Rivers remarked, ‘You look great together. Are you an item?’ Travolta replied, ‘Yes,’ prompting Newton-John to giggle, before adding seriously, ‘The truth is, we were both involved with other people. So it never happened.’
Romantic Involvement During Filming
A biography reveals that Newton-John and Travolta developed a genuine romantic connection while shooting the 1978 blockbuster Grease. Newton-John even considered marriage, but Travolta’s devotion to Scientology posed a significant barrier. Raised Catholic, Travolta converted at age 21 in 1975 and remains a prominent figure in the church.
Over 20 years post-filming, Newton-John confided in a band musician married to a Scientologist. ‘I know the Church of Scientology really reveres him as a very valuable follower,’ she said. ‘If I had married John, would he have expected me to become a Scientologist?’ The musician responded, ‘It would not have been mandatory, but it would have been encouraged.’ Newton-John replied, ‘Thank you. That’s all I want to know.’
Scientology permits marriages to non-believers unless they oppose the church as a ‘Suppressive Person.’ Similar faith-related tensions have affected other celebrity couples, including Tom Cruise’s divorces from Nicole Kidman in 2001 and Katie Holmes in 2012.
Undeniable On-Set Chemistry
Their attraction was evident from day one. In her 2019 memoir Don’t Stop Believin’, Newton-John recalled, ‘When we walked inside the room together, it was magic, and everyone saw it. Yes, we really liked each other and there was an attraction, but we would never date because we were both involved with other people at the time and both of us have a loyalty streak that runs deep.’
Co-star Didi Conn, who played Frenchy, confirmed Travolta’s interest. ‘Oh yeah [he did fancy her],’ Conn stated. She highlighted a real kiss in an alternate ending shot by director Randal Kleiser: ‘They weren’t acting in that moment… It was real.’
Lifelong Friendship Amid Denials
Despite the spark, both maintained they remained friends. Newton-John later said, ‘There’s a safety I feel when I’m with him. He’s always been my protector.’ Travolta echoed, ‘It almost happened between us a few times, but it didn’t. Sometimes life just offers you the wrong timing.’
Travolta championed Newton-John’s casting, insisting, ‘She had a brilliant voice, and I didn’t think there could be any more correct person for Sandy in the universe.’ Their bond endured through personal milestones, collaborations like Two of a Kind (1983) and ‘This Christmas’ (2002), and Grease‘s 40th anniversary in 2018.
Newton-John, who passed in 2022 at 73, married Matt Lattanzi (1984-1995), father of daughter Chloe, and John Easterling (2008-2022). Travolta was married to Kelly Preston (1991-2020).
Reflecting on Grease, Newton-John noted, ‘We did something life-changing… We’ve stayed friends ever since.’ Travolta added, ‘When you share that kind of meteoric success… you share a bond.’
