Sales of pre-owned electric vehicles (EVs) have experienced a significant surge, with a record 67 percent increase in transactions during the second quarter of 2026. This surge, totaling 110,761 units sold between April and June, marks the strongest quarterly growth ever recorded for the used EV market since the first quarter of 2024. The rise in demand for second-hand EVs is largely attributed to escalating fuel prices, influenced by geopolitical events, alongside an increased availability of newer EV models with improved battery technology.

Record Growth in the Used EV Market

The second quarter of 2026 saw a remarkable uptick in the used electric car market. The 67 percent growth, translating to 110,761 vehicles changing hands, represents the highest quarterly increase on record. This performance significantly outpaces the overall used car market, which saw a more modest 0.7 percent rise across all fuel types during the same period, with a total of 2,009,318 vehicles sold, according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. The growing popularity of used EVs is further highlighted by the increasing market share of these vehicles among all used car transactions. In the second quarter of 2026, approximately 5.5 percent of used car buyers opted for an electric vehicle, a substantial increase from the 3.3 percent recorded a year prior.

Geopolitical Factors Driving Fuel Price Hikes

A primary catalyst for the increased interest in used EVs has been the sharp rise in fuel prices. These increases have been exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, notably the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran. The conflict, which escalated following joint US-Israeli strikes on Iranian sites on February 28, led to retaliatory actions by Iran, including strikes across the region and the disruption of the Strait of Hormuz. This critical trade route, through which approximately 20 percent of global oil trade passes, experienced choked supply lines. The resulting instability in global oil markets has directly translated into higher prices at the pump for consumers worldwide.

Evidence of this price escalation is stark. In the UK, the average price for unleaded petrol, including VAT, rose from 132.50 pence per liter on February 26 to 159.97 pence per liter by July 31. Similarly, diesel prices saw a significant jump, increasing from 141.60 pence per liter on February 28 to 178.97 pence per liter on July 31, according to data from the RAC.

Increased Availability and Improved Technology Bolster Demand

Beyond the economic pressures of rising fuel costs, the supply side of the used EV market has also seen positive developments. An increased inventory of second-hand electric vehicles, including many recent models, has become available. Crucially, these newer models often feature enhanced battery ranges and improved performance, addressing common consumer concerns about EV practicality. This growing availability of desirable, modern used EVs has further stimulated demand, making the switch to electric more accessible and appealing for a broader range of buyers.

The Shifting Automotive Landscape

The surge in used EV sales reflects a broader, ongoing transformation in the automotive industry. As governments worldwide implement stricter emissions regulations and manufacturers continue to invest heavily in electric vehicle technology, the appeal of EVs is steadily growing. The current market trend suggests that the used car market is playing a vital role in accelerating EV adoption, offering a more affordable entry point for consumers looking to transition away from traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. This trend is likely to continue as fuel prices remain volatile and the availability of quality used EVs expands.

Conclusion

The record-breaking surge in used electric car sales underscores a significant shift in consumer behavior, directly influenced by rising fuel prices and broader economic and geopolitical factors. With an increasing supply of modern, capable used EVs entering the market and ongoing concerns about fossil fuel costs, the pre-owned electric vehicle sector is poised for continued growth. This trend not only benefits consumers seeking more economical and environmentally conscious transportation options but also signals a maturing market for electric vehicles, making them a more viable and attractive choice for a wider audience.
