Solomon Beebe, an incoming transfer player for the University of Virginia (UVA) football team, is facing three misdemeanor charges related to alleged animal cruelty. The charges stem from incidents reported earlier in August, with court records indicating alleged events on August 10 and August 12. The University of Virginia has stated it does not comment on ongoing criminal proceedings or student records.

Allegations of Dog Abuse Surface

According to reports, the charges were brought after a housekeeper at Beebe’s apartment complex north of Charlottesville reported witnessing alleged abuse of his pit bull. Animal protection officials were already investigating an earlier report concerning the dog’s welfare when the housekeeper provided her account. During an interview with an animal protection officer, the housekeeper described two separate instances on August 12 where she allegedly saw Beebe strike his dog.

Witness Account Details Abuse

Animal control officer Justin Gibson detailed the housekeeper’s statement, relaying that she observed Beebe holding his dog against a wall and repeatedly punching it with a closed fist. The dog reportedly yelped in pain with each strike. Following these allegations, Albermarle County animal control officers took possession of Beebe’s dog on August 13 and placed it into protective custody at the SPCA in Albemarle County. Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Pollock confirmed the seizure in a petition seeking custody of the animal.

Beebe’s Football Career and Transfer

Solomon Beebe joined the Cavaliers football program this offseason as a transfer. He previously played two seasons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he was a running back and return specialist. Beebe entered the transfer portal in December after concluding his last season at UAB with 338 rushing yards, 284 receiving yards, and six touchdowns. He arrived at the University of Virginia in January.

Recognition and On-Field Potential

Ahead of the upcoming college football season, Beebe has been named to the Paul Hornung Award watchlist, an honor that recognizes versatile and high-performing players. His new coach at UVA, Tony Elliott, spoke positively about Beebe’s immediate impact during a recent practice. Elliott noted Beebe’s ability to contribute significantly as a running back and his demonstrated skills in the return game, indicating he would be part of the team’s rotation in both capacities.

Background and Family History

Beebe’s journey to Division I football was unconventional. He was a walk-on at UAB after not receiving any Division I offers out of high school. He played one season with his brother, Lee Beebe Jr., at UAB before his brother transferred to Indiana. The Beebe family has a notable connection to football; their father, Lee Beebe Sr., played college football as a running back and wide receiver at Michigan State and Alabama State. Both of Beebe’s parents were also competitive bodybuilders.

Legal Proceedings and Next Steps

Beebe was taken into custody in connection with the animal cruelty charges and subsequently released on an unsecured bond. The legal process is now underway, with the three misdemeanor charges pending. The seizure of the dog by animal control signifies a protective measure while the investigation and legal proceedings continue. Further details regarding court dates and the resolution of the charges are expected to emerge as the case progresses.

Conclusion

The allegations against Solomon Beebe have cast a shadow over his arrival at the University of Virginia football program. As an incoming transfer with recognized potential on the field, the animal cruelty charges present a significant challenge. The legal proceedings and the welfare of the dog remain the central focus as the situation unfolds. The University of Virginia has indicated it will not comment on the matter due to its ongoing nature.
