Venezuela Struck by Powerful Earthquakes, Causing Widespread Disruption

A series of powerful earthquakes, including a magnitude 7.5 tremor, has shaken Venezuela, causing significant damage and widespread panic. The seismic activity was dramatically captured during a professional baseball game in Caracas, where players and officials experienced the terrifying force firsthand.

Baseball Game Interrupted by Tremors

During the first inning of a game between the Carabobo Mariners and the Caracas Senators, stadium cameras began to shake violently as a 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck. Footage from the Venezuelan National Baseball League’s YouTube channel, LMBP TV, shows players rushing from their dugouts to the safety of shallow centerfield. The cables supporting the netting behind home plate visibly swung as the home plate umpire removed his mask and looked towards the press box, his concern evident.

Bryant Flete, a batter for the Mariners, was in the process of stepping into the batter’s box when the stadium began to tremble. While no injuries were reported at the stadium, the announcers’ voices conveyed the palpable fear of the situation as they abruptly ceased their commentary.

Extensive Damage and Casualties Feared

The initial 7.2-magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter west of Morón, was followed closely by an even stronger 7.5-magnitude tremor. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates a potential for between 10,000 and 100,000 fatalities. Buildings collapsed in the capital, Caracas, with visible damage showing entire walls giving way and exposing interiors. Dust columns rose in several neighborhoods, indicating the severity of the destruction.

Residents described a gradual intensification of the shaking, forcing them to evacuate their homes. Many remained on the streets for hours after sunset, seeking safety amidst the debris. Collapsed structures, toppled electric poles, and blocked streets hampered rescue efforts. Power outages and loss of cellphone signal in parts of the capital further exacerbated the distress of residents, especially those with family members living abroad.

Hector Ricci, a resident of Caracas, recounted the experience: “It started off gently and then gradually grew, and in the end, we all had to leave our houses, go outside and gather together.”

Impact Felt Beyond Venezuela

The seismic event’s reach extended beyond Venezuelan borders. Buildings in Manaus, Belém, and Macapá in the Brazilian Amazon, approximately 1,000 miles away, were reportedly evacuated. The earthquakes were also felt in Colombia’s Caribbean and northeastern regions, though no damages or injuries were reported there. The Colombian Maritime Authority confirmed that the country’s Caribbean coast was not at risk of a tsunami. Tsunami alerts were issued for the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic, though one for Puerto Rico was quickly lifted.

Government Response and Public Criticism

Acting President Delcy Rodríguez stated her intention to address the nation. However, her delay in providing an official report on injuries or fatalities within three hours of the initial quake drew criticism from politicians and citizens alike. Edmundo González, the opposition’s 2024 presidential candidate, expressed the prevailing sentiment on X, stating, “The uncertainty becomes yet another layer of anguish.”

Opposition leader María Corina Machado, speaking from exile on X, urged for resilience: “May strength, serenity, and solidarity prevail among us in the face of this difficult time.”

Geological Context

Strong earthquakes are relatively uncommon in Venezuela. While the country is situated near several fault lines, its position between the South American and Caribbean plates makes it less prone to seismic activity compared to regions along the Pacific Ring of Fire, such as Mexico and Chile, which experience frequent earthquakes.
