Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan Remains Defiant Amidst Internal Party Discontent

Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan has firmly rejected suggestions of instability within her leadership, asserting her commitment to navigating current political challenges. Facing questions regarding internal party frustrations and declining public approval, Allan adopted a resolute stance, stating, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

Public Opinion and Internal Concerns

Recent polling indicates a significant portion of the electorate believes a change in leadership is necessary. An opinion survey published this week found a majority of voters favor a replacement for Allan as the Victorian Labor leader. The same poll revealed that 39 percent of Labor voters share this sentiment.

Reports suggest that some Labor Members of Parliament are experiencing growing frustration with the Premier’s performance and are questioning her judgment. These concerns are reportedly amplified by her handling of a corruption scandal involving the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU). Several MPs are said to be worried about the Premier’s inability to reverse a downward trend in polling numbers, particularly in the face of challenges from the Liberal and One Nation parties.

Premier’s Unwavering Stance

When directly confronted with leadership questions on Tuesday, Ms. Allan emphasized her dedication to her current role. “I’ve seen these reports, and I make it clear that people are looking for help, and navel-gazing doesn’t help people with those cost-of-living pressures that are so real right now,” she stated. “I’m all in. I am absolutely determined to see this through.”

Sources within the Labor party indicate that no formal leadership challenge has been initiated, and no clear alternative candidate has emerged. However, some MPs have privately suggested that a challenge is a possibility, though they acknowledge that a full-scale campaign has yet to materialize.

Navigating Political Shocks and Future Challenges

While many Labor MPs acknowledge the electoral difficulties confronting the government, a considerable number remain committed to the current leadership, believing a change could further jeopardize their re-election prospects. Ms. Allan maintained that she has no direct knowledge of any internal leadership discussions and stated that no MP has formally approached her with concerns.

Addressing the CFMEU issue, Ms. Allan highlighted her government’s efforts to bolster the powers of the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC). “We are going to give IBAC follow-the-money powers; we are going to make those powers retrospective,” she announced.

Acknowledging the evolving political landscape, Ms. Allan recognized that the government is contending with challenges on multiple fronts, including One Nation’s impact on both Liberal and Labor voter bases. “I do acknowledge that the old rules of politics have changed. We have seen that, not just today but for some time now. The global shocks are really hurting households,” Ms. Allan commented. She also conveyed her belief that Victorians do not desire the “cuts and chaos that comes with a right-wing partnership with a Liberal-National-One Nation outfit.”

Support from Colleagues

Health Minister Harriet Shing offered her support for the Premier, stating, “She has stood firm against constant opposition and division from the Liberals, from the Nationals, and now from One Nation. I’m really proud to stand by the premier, and I know others are too.”

The coming months leading up to the state election in November will be crucial in determining the extent of this support and the Premier’s ability to weather the ongoing political storms.
