Vinicius Junior scored twice to secure Real Madrid’s Champions League Round of 16 victory over Manchester City, capping the tie with a 1-2 win at the Etihad Stadium on aggregate after a 3-0 first-leg triumph. The Brazilian forward’s ‘cry cry’ gesture toward the home fans after his opening penalty sparked widespread attention.

The Gesture’s True Meaning

After converting from the spot—redeeming a miss from the previous match—Vinicius mimicked crying while placing a finger to his lips, silencing the crowd. In post-match comments translated from Portuguese, he revealed the motivation stemmed from a banner displayed by Manchester City supporters during his last visit.

“The last time I came here to Manchester City, they were making fun of me and saying that I was crying about the Ballon d’Or,” Vinicius stated. “I wasn’t disrespecting the fans but it was just a way for me to prove myself to the Manchester City fanbase today.”

Ballon d’Or Rivalry Context

The exchange traces back to Rodri’s victory over Vinicius for the 2025 Ballon d’Or. The Real Madrid star skipped the ceremony alongside teammates, prompting City fans to unveil a tifo showing Rodri kissing the trophy with the message ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’—a jab at the runner-up.

Penalty Redemption Seals the Night

Vinicius earned his spot-kick after Bernardo Silva’s handball on the goal line, burying it to level the second leg before adding a late second goal. Reflecting on the first-leg miss against Gianluigi Donnarumma, he shared: “I was really disappointed not to score last week. Fede scored the three goals and then I really, really wanted to score that penalty but it wasn’t to be. But he gave me confidence, he told me that today would be the day and I was able to score the penalty. Really happy about that.”

With the 2026 Ballon d’Or on the horizon, Vinicius’ performance underscores his growing stature in European football.
