A mother of four from Richmond, Virginia, has tragically passed away following a mission trip to Kenya aimed at assisting orphaned children. Ayla Garcia, 36, contracted a severe case of salmonella, which her pre-existing sickle cell disease complicated, leading to a fatal outcome.

Mission Trip to Aid Orphaned Children

Garcia embarked on the journey to Nairobi on June 30 with her mother, Patricia, sister, Tabitha, and aunt and uncle. The group was supporting Zion Family, a children’s home dedicated to caring for orphaned boys and girls. During her time in Kenya, Garcia shared moments of her trip, including visits to local sites, interactions with residents, and encounters with wildlife, reflecting her engagement with the community she had come to help.

Illness Strikes During Trip

By July 10, Garcia began experiencing symptoms of salmonella, which her family believes she contracted from contaminated ice. Initially attempting to recover at her hotel, her condition worsened, prompting her admission to a local hospital on July 11 at the urging of a local resident. The infection rapidly escalated, turning into a life-threatening condition over the next two weeks.

Sickle Cell Disease Complicates Infection

Garcia’s family noted that her battle with sickle cell disease significantly worsened the impact of the salmonella infection. The illness spread to her bloodstream, affecting vital organs including her kidneys and liver. She required multiple blood transfusions due to dangerously low hemoglobin levels and underwent dialysis, also suffering from jaundice.

Urgent Need for Evacuation and Fundraiser

With their return flights scheduled for July 15 and Patricia Garcia needing to return home for medication, Garcia’s mother and sister made the difficult decision to travel back to Virginia. Garcia’s aunt and uncle remained by her side. Doctors at Aga Khan University Hospital had not cleared Garcia for commercial travel, and an emergency medical evacuation was deemed necessary, with an estimated cost exceeding $250,000. In response, Tabitha initiated an online fundraiser to gather the funds needed to bring her sister home.

Ayla Garcia’s Own Account and Shifting Hopes

On July 19, Garcia posted a video from her hospital bed on Instagram, speaking about her situation and her desire to return home. Despite the challenges, her condition appeared to improve in the following days. Her family shared updates on the fundraising page, indicating she was making progress, breathing on her own, but still awaiting medical clearance for discharge.

Tragic Passing and Family’s Grief

Tragically, late on Thursday, July 20, Garcia’s family received notification of her passing. They announced her death the following day, sharing their profound grief and remembering her fight against sickle cell disease. The family has since focused on arrangements to bring her remains back to the United States, with the fundraiser noting Garcia’s wish for cremation in Kenya.

Remembering Ayla Garcia

Friends and family have shared heartfelt tributes, remembering Ayla Garcia as a kind, faithful, and humorous individual. Her mother, Patricia, described her as “happy-go-lucky” and someone who genuinely enjoyed helping others. Zion Njeri, a close friend, spoke of Garcia as a sister figure and a significant blessing, highlighting her unwavering support, encouragement, and profound faith. Njeri recalled Garcia’s consistent expressions of love and her remarkable strength and faith in the face of suffering, finding comfort in the belief that Garcia is now at peace.

Legacy and Children Left Behind

Ayla Garcia leaves behind her four children: 16-year-old Kelly, 15-year-old Kyle, seven-year-old Patrick III, and four-year-old Priya. Her sister, Tabitha, shared the profound difficulty of explaining their mother’s absence to them, highlighting their questions of “Why isn’t mommy here?” and “Where is mommy?” Garcia’s ultimate goal was to return home to her children, a plan that was tragically cut short.

Fundraising Efforts Continue

The online fundraiser, established to support Garcia’s return and now her final arrangements, had garnered over $32,700 by early Monday. The funds are being used for her cremation in Kenya and her transport home, as well as to support a planned memorial service. The outpouring of support reflects the impact Garcia had on those around her and the deep sorrow felt by her community.
