As autumn arrives in the UK, bringing cooler temperatures and increased rainfall, households are being advised on a simple, budget-friendly method to combat a common seasonal issue: window condensation. The change in weather, following a notably warm summer, often leads to increased moisture inside homes, particularly on windows. This condensation not only obscures views but can also contribute to dampness, mould, and mildew, potentially impacting both property and health.

Understanding Window Condensation

Window condensation occurs when warm, moist air inside a home comes into contact with the cold surface of window glass. As the warm air cools upon hitting the glass, it releases its moisture, which then forms tiny water droplets. This phenomenon is more prevalent during autumn and winter when outdoor temperatures drop significantly, making indoor window surfaces colder.

The consequences of persistent condensation extend beyond mere inconvenience. The damp environment created can foster the growth of mould and mildew, often appearing as black spots. These growths can damage window frames and surrounding paintwork, and their spores can negatively affect indoor air quality, potentially triggering respiratory issues or allergic reactions in susceptible individuals.

The Washing Up Liquid Solution

A surprisingly effective and inexpensive solution for preventing window condensation involves a common household item: washing up liquid. Experts suggest applying a thin layer of washing up liquid to a dry windowpane using a clean, dry cloth. This simple application can significantly reduce or even eliminate the formation of condensation.

The science behind this trick lies in the surfactants present in washing up liquid. These compounds work by lowering the surface tension of water. Instead of forming distinct droplets that cling to the glass, the water spreads out into a thinner, more uniform, and often invisible film across the window surface. This prevents the characteristic foggy appearance and reduces the likelihood of water pooling and dripping.

According to advice shared by the eco-cleaning brand Home Things, a small amount of washing up liquid, when rubbed into a dry, condensation-prone window, can effectively stop the problem. They explain that the liquid creates a barrier that prevents water from adhering to the glass, offering a quick fix for dampness and potential mould issues.

How to Apply

  • Ensure the window surface is dry.
  • Take a small amount of liquid washing up detergent.
  • Rub it evenly onto the glass with a clean, dry cloth.
  • Buff gently to create a thin, clear layer.

Specialists from Glazing Refurbishment confirm that applying a small amount of washing up liquid, such as Fairy Liquid, can temporarily prevent condensation. They note that it forms a thin film that lowers surface tension, hindering droplet formation on cold surfaces. This method is particularly effective at the bottom of windows, where condensation typically accumulates most heavily.

Limitations and Long-Term Strategies

It is crucial to understand that the washing up liquid method is a temporary solution. The soap film will gradually wear away over time, and condensation may eventually return, especially during colder periods. Therefore, while it offers immediate relief, it does not address the root causes of excessive indoor moisture.

For a more permanent resolution to condensation problems, experts recommend addressing underlying issues related to humidity levels and home insulation. Managing indoor humidity is key, as warmer air holds more moisture. Strategies include:

  • Ventilation: Ensure adequate airflow throughout the home. Opening windows for short periods, even in cooler weather, can help exchange moist indoor air for drier outdoor air. Using extractor fans in kitchens and bathrooms is also vital.
  • Heating: Consistent, moderate heating can help reduce condensation. Heating one room to a high temperature while leaving others cold can exacerbate the problem in the cooler areas. The World Health Organization suggests maintaining living room temperatures around 21°C and bedrooms at 18°C. Leaving heating on a low setting throughout the day in cold weather can help manage indoor humidity levels more effectively than short bursts of high heat.
  • Insulation: Improving the thermal insulation of walls, roofs, and floors can help keep internal surfaces warmer, reducing the temperature difference that drives condensation.
  • Drying Habits: Be mindful of moisture-producing activities like drying clothes indoors without adequate ventilation or long, hot showers.

Dealing with Existing Mould

If condensation has already led to mould growth, it’s important to tackle it promptly. Regularly wiping down damp surfaces can prevent mould from taking hold. For existing black spots, cleaning with a mild bleach solution or an anti-fungal spray is recommended, following safety guidelines for these products.

The washing up liquid trick offers a readily accessible and cost-effective way for UK households to manage window condensation this autumn, providing a temporary barrier against moisture. However, for lasting comfort and to protect property and health, a comprehensive approach involving ventilation, appropriate heating, and insulation remains essential.
