Xbox is undergoing significant restructuring, marked by recent large-scale layoffs and the closure of five development studios. This strategic shift, led by new leadership, has sparked debate about the future direction of Microsoft’s gaming division. While the company emphasizes a renewed focus, questions linger about whether a retreat to established franchises can revitalize a brand that has struggled to maintain momentum in recent years.

Mass Layoffs and Strategic Uncertainty

The gaming industry has witnessed substantial workforce reductions across major companies, and Xbox is no exception. In the past three years alone, over 9,000 employees have been laid off from the Xbox division. The most recent wave of job cuts, affecting thousands of staff and five studios, was anticipated by many, given the recurring pattern of such measures year after year. This repeated downsizing raises concerns about the long-term health and strategic planning of the Xbox business. Some industry observers have even speculated that the new leadership, Asha Sharma, might be tasked with gradually phasing out the division, a notion that gains traction when considering Xbox’s perceived lack of a clear path forward. However, Microsoft, with its vast resources, can absorb such losses, which may also contribute to a less urgent re-evaluation of the situation compared to a smaller, independent company.

A History of Shifting Strategies

Xbox, approaching its 25th anniversary, enjoyed a dominant position in its early years, particularly during the Xbox 360 era. However, its history is also characterized by a perceived lack of patience and a tendency to pivot away from established successes. The original Xbox was soon followed by the Xbox 360, which in turn saw focus shift towards the Kinect motion-sensing peripheral. The launch of the Xbox One was heavily influenced by an emphasis on television integration, a strategy that ultimately proved less effective than anticipated. This pattern of chasing new trends rather than nurturing existing strengths has been a recurring theme. Even recent decisions, such as the price increase for Game Pass, were quickly reversed, suggesting a continued struggle to commit to and develop long-term strategies.

The Focus on Core Franchises

Under the new leadership, there’s an apparent emphasis on ‘greater focus,’ a directive that seems to point towards doubling down on established, high-profile franchises. This includes flagship titles like Halo, Gears of War, and Forza, as well as Bethesda’s major intellectual properties such as Fallout and The Elder Scrolls. While Call of Duty remains a significant revenue driver, its multiplatform status for the foreseeable future means it plays a different role in Xbox’s internal strategy, particularly after its exclusion from day-one Game Pass releases.

Bethesda’s Underperformance and Potential Solutions

Concerns have been voiced regarding the pace and quality of releases from Bethesda. The studio’s output, particularly for franchises like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, has been seen as underperforming since around 2015. While the idea of replacing key creative leads like Todd Howard might be considered a bold move, the current approach appears to involve reassigning development of these major franchises to other studios. This strategy mirrors past missed opportunities, such as the eight-year ownership of Obsidian Entertainment, the developer behind the beloved Fallout: New Vegas, without a new installment or even a remaster emerging. This highlights a persistent issue with mismanagement and a failure to effectively prioritize and schedule new game releases.

The Appeal of Core IPs

There is clear player demand for new entries in franchises like Fallout, The Elder Scrolls, and Forza Horizon. However, the enthusiasm for Halo and Gears of War is less certain. Both franchises are perceived by some as dated in their gameplay mechanics, with Gears of War in particular being seen as stylistically stuck in the past. While mismanagement can be a factor, it’s also possible that certain games, despite their initial success, have a limited shelf life or appeal that doesn’t easily translate across different eras or platforms.

Relying on the Familiar, Abandoning the Avant-Garde?

The current direction suggests a move away from more experimental titles, such as those developed by Double Fine and Ninja Theory, in favor of a concentrated effort on core franchises. While consolidating resources on proven IPs might seem logical, it risks repeating past mistakes. Xbox has previously attempted to build its success around these franchises, with mixed results. With a reduced workforce and fewer internal studios, the reliance on third-party developers is likely to increase, though the industry’s consolidation trend limits the pool of potential partners.

The Third-Party Question

A significant strategic decision facing Xbox is whether to fully embrace a third-party publishing model, similar to EA’s approach in its earlier days when it released a wide variety of titles beyond sports games and Battlefield. This would involve making Xbox games available on multiple platforms, rather than maintaining console exclusivity. Despite the potential benefits, current statements and actions seem to indicate a reluctance to fully commit to this path. The company appears to be in denial about declining hardware sales, even before recent price increases, and a general lack of widespread interest in its first-party offerings beyond Forza Horizon.

A Retreat to the Past?

The prevailing sentiment is that Xbox is attempting to revert to a pre-Xbox Series X, or perhaps even pre-Xbox One, strategy. While this might appeal to internal stakeholders, it presents significant practical challenges. Developing games that cost hundreds of millions of dollars requires a large install base to recoup costs, something a console with limited market share cannot provide. Furthermore, expecting consumers to invest in new hardware to play sequels to franchises that many feel have long since reached their natural conclusion is a questionable proposition. Making a title as significant as The Elder Scrolls 6 an exclusive, for instance, could be a high-risk gamble.

Conclusion: A Precarious Position

If the current leadership’s strategy does not involve a radical departure from these apparent plans, the outlook for Xbox remains uncertain. The potential for success hinges on whether this focus on core franchises can be executed effectively, or if it represents a continuation of past missteps. The possibility of a secret, innovative plan remains, which would be a welcome development for the industry, especially given the current competitive landscape. However, based on available information, Xbox appears to be in a precarious and desperate situation, with its future direction heavily reliant on recapturing past glories in a rapidly evolving market.
