Pearl’s Departure and Son’s Rise
Pearl guided Auburn to the Final Four last season but fell short against national champions Florida. In mid-September, he transitioned to an ambassadorial role at Auburn University. Steven Pearl, who lacks prior head coaching experience and played college basketball under his father at Tennessee, assumed the role.
Direct Admission of Nepotism
As Auburn battles for an NCAA Tournament spot, Bruce Pearl confirms his involvement. “Right now, Auburn is on the bubble,” Pearl states. “They are either going to play their way in or play their way out… Looks to me like they got to win one more to get in.”
He adds unequivocally, “That’s objectively how I feel. Am I rooting for my son to make the NCAA Tournament? Of course I am. Did I help my son get the job? Nepotism? Of course I did.”
Auburn’s Path to March Madness
The Tigers sit at 16-14, with their postseason hopes resting on a final regular-season matchup against No. 16 Alabama and performance in the SEC Tournament. Strong outcomes in both are essential for an at-large bid to the 2026 Big Dance.
Recent Controversy
Last week, Pearl sparked backlash by arguing that undefeated Miami University (Ohio), holders of a 30-0 record, should win their conference tournament rather than receive an at-large bid. “If we’re selecting the 68 best teams, then Miami (Ohio) is going to have to win their tournament to qualify as a champion. Because as an at-large, they are not one of the best teams in the country,” he remarked on TNT Sports.
Miami athletic director David Sayler responded sharply on X: “The disrespect is awful and u should not be near a TV studio covering this sport when u show your true colors! Even slipped in a ‘we’ when talking about Auburn, nice work!”
