Derby County’s Dion Sanderson gears up to confront his former club, Birmingham City, for the first time since his January transfer. The ex-Blues captain now thrives as a pivotal defender for the Rams, who hold a one-place and four-point advantage in the Championship table. Sanderson contributed to Derby’s gritty 1-0 triumph over Portsmouth on Monday, positioning them to potentially crush Birmingham’s promotion dreams at Pride Park.
Sanderson Treats Clash as Routine Match
Sanderson maintains a professional outlook on the upcoming fixture. “It’s just another game in my eyes, another game that we will be looking to get three points in,” he stated. “I don’t really have a game where it’s like, ‘I can’t wait to play this’, it’s about getting the win and moving on.”
When pressed on whether he has a personal point to prove, Sanderson affirmed, “Yes.” He elaborated: “Every player has a point to prove. As a team we set our standards really high, it’s about getting the job done and finishing on a high.”
Background on Sanderson’s Blues Exit
The 26-year-old defender faced a abrupt benching under Birmingham manager Chris Davies early in their League One title charge. Excluded from preseason preparations last summer, Sanderson awaited a transfer opportunity. Initially, a reunion with Derby boss John Eustace seemed unlikely.
“At the start of the window I did have a quick conversation with the gaffer and he was like, ‘Listen, I don’t think it will happen so crack on…’ and I was still waiting for other clubs basically, then towards the end of the window they came in and straight away I was like, ‘Yeah, get me there’,” Sanderson explained.
He added: “I’ve always said that even if the manager wasn’t here it would still be my first choice. It’s such a big club; the fanbase, the history, the environment.”
Eustace’s Impact at Derby
Unlike promotion favorites Birmingham, Derby entered the season as underdogs. Yet Eustace, sacked by Blues in October 2023 despite a sixth-place standing, has engineered a play-off push—just a year after avoiding relegation on the final day.
Sanderson praised the manager: “He makes the squad believe we can beat anyone in this league. He makes us feel like we could play against Man City and beat them. He has great man management skills.”
The defender highlighted Eustace’s tactical acumen: “He really pinpoints other teams’ weaknesses and we try to exploit it. It comes out on a game day, he knows how to fire everyone up. He’s proved it at every club he’s been at. The positions he’s left the club in or finished in have been really good. He’s a successful manager in my eyes and a lot would say the same.”
