Manchester United Poised for Summer Defensive Reshuffle
Manchester United faces a significant summer transfer window under the guidance of permanent head coach Michael Carrick. Having secured a third-place finish and a return to the Champions League, the club is well-positioned to attract top talent and invest in the squad. While the forward line was a focus last year, attention is now shifting towards strengthening the midfield, with notable changes also anticipated in the defensive and goalkeeping departments.
Goalkeeper Situation Undergoing Transformation
Senne Lammens is firmly established as the first-choice goalkeeper following his arrival last summer. However, the No. 2 position is set for a shake-up, with both current back-up goalkeepers reportedly nearing exits for a combined fee of approximately £48.3 million.
Andre Onana, who spent the past year on loan at Trabzonspor, is returning to Old Trafford. However, club officials have indicated he is not part of future plans. Trabzonspor’s president has confirmed ongoing discussions to make Onana’s loan move permanent.
Altay Bayindir, initially a starter this season, has lost his place to the impressive Lammens and is also linked with a move back to his native Turkey. This opens up a vacancy for a new back-up to join Tom Heaton, who recently extended his contract by one year.
Potential Return of Former Academy Product
Reports suggest the club is considering re-signing goalkeeper Sam Johnstone from Wolves. The 33-year-old, who has made 27 appearances across all competitions in the last two years for Wolves, could provide valuable experience and help fulfill homegrown player quotas. Johnstone previously came through the United academy but did not make a senior appearance.
Left-Back Position a Top Priority
The central defence and right-back positions appear more settled for the upcoming season. However, the left-back role requires immediate attention due to a shortage of options. Tyrell Malacia is confirmed to be departing upon the expiry of his contract this summer.
Carrick has utilized Patrick Dorgu as a left winger when available. Meanwhile, veteran Luke Shaw, aged 30, is unlikely to manage another full 38-game league campaign, and his contract is set to expire next year.
Dream Target and Alternatives Emerge
The club’s ideal candidate to fill the left-back void is reportedly Newcastle’s Lewis Hall. While Newcastle insists the 21-year-old is not for sale and is under contract until 2029, a substantial offer, potentially in the region of £70 million, could prompt a sale, given they acquired him for £35 million two years ago. Hall is considered an ideal long-term replacement for Shaw, though his acquisition may prove too costly.
Youngster Harry Amass is another option within the club, though he lacks Premier League experience compared to Hall. Nathaniel Brown, who has impressed at Eintracht Frankfurt, is also being monitored by United as another potential alternative.
