Growing Worries for Iconic Music Figure Molly Meldrum
Significant concerns are emerging within Australia’s media and music industries regarding the declining health of beloved music personality Molly Meldrum. Reports circulating suggest his condition may be more serious than publicly acknowledged, sparking widespread unease.
For some time, there have been intermittent reports about Meldrum’s worsening health. Individuals close to industry circles now express fear that the situation has escalated considerably, with some suggesting the veteran entertainer is approaching a critical phase.
A Life Altered by a Devastating Fall
Meldrum, 83, has never fully recovered from a severe fall at his Melbourne home in 2011. This accident significantly impacted his life and led to a gradual withdrawal from public appearances. He now remains largely out of the spotlight, reportedly cared for by his partner, Yan Wangngam, at their Melbourne residence. Close friends are understood to visit regularly.
Past Statements Offer Glimpse into Current State
In March, Meldrum’s long-time business manager addressed his health, stating that while the music industry veteran is “not as strong as he used to be,” he remains alive and well. “The reality is he’s had some issues,” Mark Klemens reportedly told a publication. “And he’s getting older – he’s 83 now – and, physically, he’s not as strong as he used to be. But he’s comfortable, and he’s happy. He hasn’t lost his razor-sharp wit, and he still has a drink. Life is just a lot quieter.”
Recent Public Absences Fuel Concerns
Rumors of Meldrum’s health decline gained traction in June 2024 when he was absent from the funeral of his friend and former colleague John Blackman. Further concerns arose in October 2024 following the release of photographs shared by his partner on social media. These images depicted a frail Meldrum, a stark contrast to his more energetic appearance at the Australian Open ten months prior.
One photograph appeared to show the television legend resting on a couch in his Melbourne home, without his signature hat and with his mouth open. Another image captured Meldrum, bearded and lying on his verandah, seemingly dozing with a hand over his chest.
At the time, a close friend indicated that Meldrum was “struggling” with his health and had largely retreated from public life. Many associates were reportedly surprised when Meldrum missed an event celebrating the 50th anniversary of “Countdown,” the ABC music program that propelled him to stardom.
The Lingering Impact of the 2011 Accident
The announcer for “Countdown,” Gavin Wood, noted that Meldrum’s health struggles have persisted since the near-fatal fall from a ladder in December 2011. “The fall, it is all down to the fall, was a horrible thing to have happened,” Wood reportedly commented.
Meldrum later issued a statement acknowledging the “Countdown” milestone. He has remained out of the public eye since incidents in early 2023, including an event at a Rod Stewart concert in Melbourne and another during Sir Elton John’s Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. Meldrum attributed these to wardrobe malfunctions, though footage of similar public displays had surfaced from earlier events.
The enduring legacy of “Countdown,” which aired from 1974 to 1987, is attributed to Meldrum’s enthusiasm and vision, according to Wood.
