Actor William McNamara, once a prominent figure in 90s cinema, has publicly shared details of his struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, which significantly impacted his burgeoning Hollywood career. Now 21 years sober, McNamara is re-emerging in the entertainment landscape with a new satirical series.

From Heartthrob to Activist

McNamara, 61, rose to fame with memorable roles in films such as the 1995 thriller Copycat and the 1988 drama Stealing Home. However, his promising acting trajectory was overshadowed by substance abuse. This led him to re-evaluate his priorities, prompting a shift towards animal rights activism. His dedication to this cause even led to a jail sentence in Japan.

The Path to Sobriety and a New Project

Speaking recently, McNamara emphasized the ongoing nature of his sobriety journey. “I go to AA meetings still. You really can’t stop,” he stated. He explained his continued commitment to attending support group meetings, even after achieving long-term sobriety. “There was a guy there that had 21 years when I walked in the door and he helped me. So that’s why we do it. I don’t want to drink. I could care less about drinking or drugs,” he elaborated.

McNamara’s personal philosophy now centers on taking responsibility and contributing positively to the world. “I don’t really think about struggles because I think I take responsibility for my life and I’m sure I could do anything,” he said. “Really the challenges are how can I make the world a better place? That’s the big challenge. What can I do to help others or help animals really?”

The actor also discussed the financial ramifications of his career pivot, admitting to depleting his savings while pursuing his activism abroad. “I got into animal activism. I became like a big time activist. I joined Sea Shepherd. I went to Japan. I went to jail there,” he recalled. “And I had all this money that I’d saved up from… the money ran out and that’s the actor’s life. It sucks.”

Critique of Modern Hollywood

While focusing on independent film projects, McNamara expressed strong opinions about the current state of Hollywood. He criticized the vast pay disparities, particularly the substantial salaries awarded to A-list stars by “billionaires” while lesser-known actors receive significantly less. “There’s either billionaires or there’s peasants…And everything’s streaming, so the residuals are a lot less,” he observed.

McNamara reflected on how his priorities have shifted over time. “I don’t really care about that (winning an award). I don’t really think about that. I think the awards are kind of like watered down so much anyway and it’s so political,” he stated. He remains committed to acting, particularly in his own projects, and sees a long-term future in the industry. “That’s the one great thing about actors. They need the old grandfather, the old crotchety old man. They’re always going to need that guy.”

A Diverse Career and Recent Heroism

McNamara’s acting credits also include roles in Texasville (1990), Liz: The Elizabeth Taylor Story (1995), and a lead role in the CW series Disaster Strike Force. He has previously acknowledged that his past substance abuse issues significantly hindered his acting career.

In recent years, McNamara has been recognized for his efforts in animal rescue. In 2025, he participated in efforts to save animals affected by wildfires in Los Angeles, working with organizations like the Animal Advocacy Network and Viva Global Rescue. He also played a role in animal rescues during the 2018 Woolsey fire in Malibu.
