Anya Taylor-Joy Reflects on Painful Childhood Bullying
Anya Taylor-Joy, now a celebrated figure in the acting world and a muse for fashion houses, has opened up about the painful experiences of being bullied for her appearance and sexuality during her childhood. Despite her current status as a style icon, the actress revealed that her early years were marked by significant struggles with her peers.
Early Life and School Experiences
The 30-year-old actress relocated from Argentina to London at the age of six, attending the fee-paying Queen’s Gate School in South Kensington. Her experience at the school was isolating from the outset. Taylor-Joy recounted an incident where she kissed a classmate on the cheek, which led to her being ostracized and repeatedly told she was not beautiful.
These formative experiences of teasing for her appearance significantly impacted her. However, even as a teenager, her distinctive presence caught the eye of a modeling agency scout. While attempting to break in a pair of high heels for a party outside Harrods, a car stopped beside her. Inside was Sarah Doukas, head of the Storm modeling agency, who was immediately keen to sign her.
Transition to Acting and Career Highlights
Initially, Taylor-Joy expressed no interest in modeling. However, upon learning that modeling could be a pathway to acting, a career she already aspired to, she saw an opportunity. This led to her signing with Storm at just 16 years old.
Her acting career gained momentum with notable roles in horror films like 2016’s The Witch and Split. She achieved widespread recognition for her captivating performance in the Netflix hit series The Queen’s Gambit.
Advocacy and Personal Philosophy
Taylor-Joy also shared her experience working on the 2024 film Furiosa, where she portrayed the lead character. She actively lobbied director George Miller to achieve the ending she envisioned for the character. “This was my dream. It was my dream to be in these Mad Max movies and as this crazy feminist icon,” she stated. “I just advocated and advocated and advocated for her to live up to her name. It was my mountain on that movie, and I got it, but it was hard, hard won.”
She acknowledged the difficulty in discussing her collaboration with the 81-year-old Australian director, noting that complete honesty could be personally damaging. Taylor-Joy has also spoken about how her uprooted childhood, marked by frequent moves, left her feeling alienated. “It was difficult for little me,” she reflected. However, she now views these experiences positively, seeing them as preparation for her nomadic life as an actress.
“But now I look at it with so much love, because I just think it perfectly set me up to live this kind of transient life,” she added. Having been raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, before her move to the UK, she previously described the transition as “traumatic” and initially resisted learning English, hoping to return to Argentina.
Embracing a Nomadic Lifestyle
Currently splitting her time between London and Los Angeles, Taylor-Joy embraces her nomadic nature. “I’ve always been nomadic by nature,” she said. “Now I’ve just fully embraced it as part of who I am. If I have a couple of days off, I’m always like, Ooh, what’s within driving distance? If it’s six hours or less, I’m like, Let’s go. Why not?”
Striking Photoshoot
For a recent photoshoot featured in a prominent US industry publication, Taylor-Joy showcased a series of striking looks. These included a white lace jacket and skirt by Ludovic de Saint Sernin, a glittering silver Rabanne outfit, a satin Datt Official gown while playing in the sea, and a black Lanvin dress while lounging on the beach.
The actress, who married musician Malcolm McRae in 2022, is set to appear next in the Apple TV+ miniseries Lucky, portraying a con artist on the run.
