Actress Bijou Phillips has announced she has successfully received a life-saving kidney transplant, marking a significant turning point after a challenging period of searching for a donor. Phillips shared the positive news on Tuesday, posting a photograph from her hospital bed where she is recovering from the procedure.
A Desperate Search for a Donor
The 45-year-old actress had publicly appealed for a living kidney donor earlier this year. This urgent request came after a previous kidney transplant, performed in 2017, was ultimately rejected by her body. Phillips had been undergoing dialysis and emphasized the critical nature of her situation in February, telling her social media followers that “time is of the essence.” She expressed concerns that a kidney infection could have severe, even fatal, consequences.
Phillips expressed profound gratitude for the outpouring of support and the willingness of individuals to come forward for testing. “I am beyond beyond grateful to everyone who rushed into help me, get checked to donate, you are all heroes!” she stated in her announcement.
The Kidney Exchange and Voucher Program
The successful transplant was facilitated through a kidney exchange program, a complex system designed to help patients who have difficulty finding a compatible donor. Phillips explained how her brother, Aron Wilson, played a crucial role in this process. He donated a kidney as part of the exchange, which in turn enabled another person to donate to someone else, ultimately leading to a match for Phillips.
“My wonderful brother donated in the kidney exchange! He saved a life, and the life he saved had a special person donate for them, and then a few weeks later! The voucher program found me a perfect match!” Phillips explained. She described the resulting match as being so close that it felt as if she had received the kidney from a family member.
The kidney exchange program works by pairing up individuals who are willing to donate a kidney but are not compatible with their intended recipient. By creating a chain of willing donors and recipients, the program allows multiple patients to receive life-saving transplants when direct donation isn’t possible. The voucher program, often linked to exchanges, allows a donor to commit to donating at a later date, which can then be used to secure a kidney for the intended recipient sooner.
Praise for Medical Team and Recovery
Phillips also lauded the surgical team and the medical staff at UCLA Health for their expertise and care. She specifically commended Dr. Veale, describing his surgical technique as “magic” and highlighting his innovative approach that minimized muscle cutting during the procedure. This technique, she noted, significantly reduced her need for pain medication, allowing her to manage with just Tylenol.
“I am so blown away by Dr. Veale and the magic he does! The kidney exchange, voucher program, and his surgical skills!!!” she wrote. “He only cut the fascia! He didn’t cut the muscles so I didn’t even really need much pain medication at all, just Tylenol!”
Remarkably, Phillips reported feeling significantly better just five days after the surgery than she did four months post-transplant in 2017. “The technique he developed is brilliant and he is a lifesaver!” she stated regarding her surgeon. She extended her thanks to the “amazing doctors and coordinators and nurses and everybody” at UCLA Health for their exceptional support throughout her treatment.
Personal Context
Phillips’s health journey unfolds against a backdrop of significant personal challenges. In September 2023, she filed for divorce from actor Danny Masterson, following his sentencing to 30 years to life in prison for the rape of two women. The actress has been navigating these personal circumstances while managing her serious health condition.
Her recovery marks a moment of relief and optimism. The successful kidney transplant offers Phillips a renewed chance at a healthier life, made possible by the generosity of her brother, the innovation of medical exchange programs, and the skill of her surgical team.
The actress concluded her announcement with a heartfelt message to her brother, Aron Wilson: “love you Aron! Thank you the most!”
