Sam’s Delusion Takes Center Stage in Coronation Street Drama
Young Sam Blakeman’s struggles with psychosis have gone unnoticed by his father, Nick Tilsley, but that’s about to change. Next week, Sam’s severe mental health crisis comes to light, with Carla Connor being the first to recognize his symptoms, drawing on her own past experiences with hallucinations and intrusive thoughts.
Nick’s Awakening Through Carla’s Concern
Actor Ben Price, who portrays Nick Tilsley, explained that it’s Carla’s genuine concern for Sam that finally prompts Nick to take action. “If Carla is saying it, and Carla has seen it and gone through it, there’s a moment where I think Nick knows Carla enough to go, ‘She’s seen something properly,’” Price stated. He elaborated on Carla’s impact: “What’s so good about a character like Carla is that, because of what she’s been through, she’s very black and white. Everyone wants that so then when she does break that hard shell it makes you sit up and take notice.”
Nick’s perception shifts dramatically from dismissing Sam’s behavior as “teenage angst” to realizing the severity of his condition. “He’s got psychosis. He’s really not well. He’s got to go to a hospital. He needs professional treatment. That’s a big leap,” Price noted.
Hallucinations and a Troubled Reality
For weeks, Sam has been experiencing intense hallucinations, including visions of Will Driscoll threatening him and Roy Cropper urging him to confront his perceived ‘bully.’ The Roy that Sam has been confiding in is not a real person, a fact Sam remains unaware of. Roy himself becomes concerned when Sam references a conversation they supposedly had about Will, leading to confusion. Unbeknownst to Roy, Sam then heads off to confront Will, only to become fearful that Will intends to kill him.
A Dangerous Turn of Events
Ben Price teased that a pivotal moment occurs when Sam sees two versions of Roy, leading him to lock himself in the cafe. “I think what happens for Nick is that the situation suddenly bridges the gap into becoming a bit dangerous. Sam has never been dangerous before. He’s not letting Nick in, and then he locks himself up and gets aggressive to Roy,” Price described.
Praise for Young Co-Star Jude Riordan
Price expressed immense pride in his young co-star Jude Riordan, who plays Sam. Having watched Riordan grow on the show since 2020, Price considers it a privilege to witness him lead such a significant storyline. “It’s very tricky in the show to go from a child actor to, you know, your voice breaks, you get bigger, and you’re given a story which brilliantly bridges the child-to-adult story,” Price said, highlighting their close working relationship and collaborative approach to scenes.
He added, “It’s a real privilege [for Jude], but it’s also a pressure. And not everyone can do it. You’re acting something differently than everyone else is seeing. It’s not easy. And the storyline, although I’m there and the family is there, is his.”
Price further praised Riordan’s performance, stating, “Selfishly, I want him to be brilliant, and he is brilliant. When you’re with someone who’s discovering that power as an actor, in an adult story, it’s really amazing to watch. He is really, really good and such a nice young lad as well.” He noted Riordan’s diligence and a certain “Platt about him,” making their collaboration a rewarding experience.
Family Support and Lingering Heartache
As Nick grapples with his son’s critical condition, he finds himself turning to the Platts for support, rather than his ex-partner Leanne or his current girlfriend Toyah. “He knows the Platts are weirdly, absolutely dysfunctional in their own way, but they’ve been through so much together as a family. Oddly, he can go to David,” Price explained. He believes Nick finds it easier to confide in his brother David, who has experienced significant personal challenges and raised children himself.
Potential Rivalry and Unresolved Feelings
Despite his past with Leanne, Ben Price suggested that Nick may still harbor feelings for her, especially with her new romance with newcomer Idris Nazir. “I think it’s quite painful for Nick to see Leanne with someone else. I think he finds it very difficult,” Price commented. He anticipates that Nick will feel lost and even angry as Sam opens up to Idris, acknowledging a sense of incompleteness within himself.
The arrival of Idris, a successful businessman, could also lead to a rivalry with Nick. “I think Nick finds it a bit tricky. Nick slightly lives in his world of owning the bistro and having a certain standing,” Price observed. He noted that Nick’s confidence can be shaken when he can’t handle situations, and he may see Idris as a formidable match, a prospect Nick doesn’t welcome.
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30 PM on ITV1 and ITV X.
