The Dallas Cowboys have applied the franchise tag to wide receiver George Pickens, locking him in for the 2026 NFL season with a fully guaranteed one-year deal worth $28 million.

Pickens Emerges as Offensive Powerhouse

Since joining the Cowboys from Pittsburgh last season, the 24-year-old Pickens has become a vital part of the team’s offense. In his debut year with Dallas, he recorded 90 receptions for 1,409 yards and nine touchdowns—a career high that surpassed his previous best with the Steelers by four scores.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed the decision, emphasizing his commitment to the star receiver. Jones plans to negotiate a long-term extension beyond the tag, which restricts Pickens’ free agency options as his rookie contract expires.

I’m talking to him all the time by virtue of my excitement for him. He’s better than, as far as what he contributed to our team, showing the potential that he could contribute. I’m looking forward to getting things worked out so George can be a Cowboy a long time.

Jones shared these thoughts in a recent interview on the team’s website.

Key Offseason Priorities for Dallas

This move comes amid a busy offseason for the Cowboys, who face 15 unrestricted free agents, including edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney and running back Javonte Williams. Securing Pickens addresses a critical need to maintain offensive firepower.

Quarterback Dak Prescott voiced strong support for retaining Pickens during the Pro Bowl in San Francisco.

I think it must be done. I think obviously from Jerry to everybody down understands that, and the impact on this offense and the team and the great player that he is. We’ve got to find a way to keep him here.

The franchise tag takes effect before the new league year in March, ensuring Pickens remains in Dallas for at least 2026.
