Dianna Russini, a prominent NFL reporter, has stepped down from The Athletic just days after photos emerged showing her with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel at a Sedona, Arizona resort. The images, captured before the NFL owners meetings in Phoenix on March 29, sparked an internal review at the outlet.
Russini’s Resignation Letter
In a letter to The Athletic executive editor Steven Ginsberg, Russini emphasized her commitment to professional journalism. “I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published,” she wrote. Russini noted initial support from the outlet but cited escalating media speculation and leaks as reasons for her departure before her contract ends on June 30.
“Rather than allowing this to continue, I have decided to step aside now… I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career,” Russini stated.
Careers and Context
Russini joined The Athletic in 2023 following nearly a decade at ESPN, where she served as a SportsCenter anchor, NFL analyst, and insider. She also hosted a podcast and appeared on the outlet’s video platform for The Athletic.
Vrabel and Russini, both married, issued statements downplaying the photos. Russini clarified that the images “don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day.” Vrabel described the interaction as “completely innocent” and dismissed other suggestions as “laughable.”
Internal Review and Next Steps
The Athletic launched a review of Russini’s conduct after the photos surfaced. Ginsberg explained that initial explanations addressed concerns, but new details prompted further investigation. “While our investigation into Dianna’s conduct was ongoing, she chose to resign,” Ginsberg told staff. The review of her work continues.
Vrabel skipped the Patriots’ pre-draft news conference on Monday. The former player, who won three Super Bowls with New England, earned AP NFL Coach of the Year honors last season after a 14-3 record, despite a Super Bowl loss to Seattle. He previously won the award with Tennessee in 2021 and now prepares for his second season leading the Patriots.
