A driver who collided with a cyclist after admitting he forgot to wear his prescribed glasses has received a suspended prison sentence. The incident occurred when Uchenna Agunenye, 48, swerved his vehicle and struck a woman riding in a designated cycle lane. The collision resulted in the cyclist being thrown from her bike and hitting a metal railing, sustaining multiple fractures.
Reckless Driving Incident and Cyclist’s Injuries
CCTV footage captured the moment Agunenye, driving a silver Citroen C4, impacted the cyclist. The video shows the car continuing down the road after the initial contact. Emergency services and bystanders rushed to the aid of the injured woman. She was transported to a local hospital where she received treatment for a broken leg, heel, and several toes. The court was informed that she also suffered lacerations and a fracture to her elbow, necessitating surgical intervention.
At the scene, Agunenye underwent a breathalyser test and a drug wipe, both of which yielded negative results. However, a roadside eyesight assessment revealed he failed to meet the required standard. Subsequent inquiries confirmed that his driving licence stipulated the mandatory use of corrective lenses while operating a vehicle. He was subsequently arrested.
Driver Admits Fault and Court Sentencing
