Black lichen stains embed deeply into patio surfaces, resisting even powerful pressure washing and frustrating homeowners more than moss or algae. A straightforward solution uses just white vinegar, water, and a stiff brush to eliminate these marks completely.

Why Pressure Washing Falls Short

Daniel Scholfield, owner of The Expert Gate Company, explains that pressure washing removes visible spots but fails to kill underlying organisms. This approach risks damaging paving slabs. The key lies in targeting the lichen directly with the right household item: distilled white vinegar, the only common cleaner effective against it.

Preparation for Optimal Results

Clear the area first by brushing away debris and dirt with a stiff brush or hands. Rinse thoroughly with water to ensure the solution penetrates evenly on a clean surface.

Applying the Vinegar Solution

Mix white vinegar and water in a 50-50 ratio. Perform a patch test on a small area to check for discoloration or damage. Pour the mixture over stained sections and let it soak for up to one hour.

Scrub vigorously with a stiff brush to lift residue, then rinse with clean water. Repeat if faint marks persist. For tough spots, extend soak time or slightly increase vinegar concentration, but Scholfield warns, “Don’t overdo it as too much may begin to damage the patio surface.”

Prevent Future Stains

Apply a diluted vinegar-water solution regularly to keep lichen at bay and maintain pristine paving.
