Family Demands AI Accountability in Ex-NFL Player’s Murder Case
The family of Gabriella Perpetuo, the woman allegedly murdered by former NFL player Darron Lee, is calling for accountability from OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT. Court documents reveal allegations that the artificial intelligence tool was used in a failed attempt to conceal the crime.
Lee, 31, faces the death penalty in connection with the February death of his girlfriend, Perpetuo, 29. A medical examiner determined the cause of death to be multiple blunt force injuries, with an autopsy report detailing 12 distinct injuries, including severe hematomas, bone fractures, and stab wounds.
AI Used in Alleged Cover-Up Attempt
Prosecutors have presented evidence in court indicating that Lee allegedly used ChatGPT to inquire about seeking medical assistance without involving law enforcement. Further court filings claim Lee posed questions to the AI about whether a fall could result in bruising to both eyes and ‘two stabby looking wounds.’ Additional queries reportedly focused on injuries consistent with a shower fall.
Bodycam footage from the initial police response at the scene shows the former first-round draft pick suggesting that Perpetuo ‘may have slipped and fallen in the shower,’ while denying knowledge of the circumstances surrounding her death.
Legal Action Considered Against AI Company
reports Chattanooga, Tennessee indicate that Perpetuo’s family is exploring legal action against OpenAI. C. Mark Warren, an attorney representing the family, stated, “The defendant in this case engaged ChatGPT to cover up a crime.” He emphasized the importance of AI platforms having safeguards, adding, “We feel like that it’s important that ChatGPT and all AI platforms have guardrails in place where they can engage, but not engage without consequences.”
Perpetuo was discovered deceased at a residence in Tennessee in February. It remains uncertain if the family intends to file a lawsuit against OpenAI.
Broader Concerns Over AI Capabilities
OpenAI and other artificial intelligence developers have faced scrutiny for their platforms’ interactions on sensitive topics, including those related to self-harm. Legal experts suggest that if Perpetuo was alive when Lee allegedly used ChatGPT for advice, the technology may have inadvertently hindered the possibility of saving her life.
Darron Lee, a former linebacker for the New York Jets, is currently held without bond at the Hamilton County Jail in Tennessee. He has entered a plea of not guilty.
Gruesome Scene Details Emerge
In February, prosecutors shared graphic details from the crime scene, describing “blood in just about every room” at the Tennessee home where Perpetuo was found. Detective Brian Lockhart of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office described the scene as “in disarray,” with numerous boxes and belongings scattered throughout the living room. The victim was discovered on the floor.
“There was blood going up the staircase, on the hand railing there was blood, on the walls there was blood, on the floor in the living room there was blood, in the floor on the hallway and the stairs… there was blood in just about every room except one,” Lockhart testified in court.
Perpetuo’s body was found at a residence near Ooltewah Elementary School. Autopsy findings revealed severe injuries, including significant brain trauma, a fractured neck, extensive bruising, a large bite mark on her shoulder and thigh, and stab wounds to her legs. The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma.
Evidence at the scene included a shattered microwave, scattered glass, and alcohol bottles. Cleaning supplies, such as bleach wipes and a spray bottle, were discovered upstairs. Lee reportedly made the 911 call from the home outside of Chattanooga and was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
Lee’s NFL Career
Prior to his legal troubles, Lee had a notable career in the NFL, playing 58 games for the Jets, Kansas City Chiefs, and Buffalo Bills between 2016 and 2020. A standout player at Ohio State, he was selected 20th overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Jets following a national championship win. Lee recorded 241 tackles, 17 tackles for loss, and four sacks during his time with the Jets before being traded to the Chiefs. He later played briefly for the Bills and the Las Vegas Raiders before his release in 2021.
