Environment Canada issues cold warnings for western sections of eastern Ontario, targeting Kingston, Pembroke, and Bancroft regions. Dangerously low temperatures strike Friday and potentially Saturday night, with wind chill values dropping to around –30°C in Kingston and Belleville. Northern spots near Pembroke and Bancroft face even harsher conditions, nearing –35°C.

Overnight lows hover near –20°C Friday across these areas. Kingston temperatures remain steady for the next two nights, while Pembroke dips to about –25°C Saturday and Sunday nights. Ottawa experiences milder wind chill Friday evening.

Snow Squall Watch

A snow squall watch covers Pembroke and Fort-Coulonge, warning of intense snow bursts Friday afternoon that could reduce visibility and create hazardous travel.

Protection Tips from Health Canada

Health Canada urges layering clothes under a wind-resistant outer garment. Shield hands, feet, ears, and nose from frostbite, and stay active to boost circulation. On clear days like Saturday, apply sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm against windburn. Avoid alcohol, which masks true body chill.

Community Warming Options

Municipalities respond with daytime warming at libraries and dedicated overnight centres. Belleville and Cornwall operate specialized shelters. Kingston relocates its temporary centre to the Salvation Army at 342 Patrick St., open 9 p.m. to 8:30 a.m. Friday through Sunday nights.

Ottawa directs unsheltered individuals to emergency or transitional shelters, amid some backlash. The city provides an online map of warming locations during extreme cold. Dial 311 for shelter referrals or assistance. Call 911 for hypothermia or other emergencies.
