A compelling drama series drawn from a heartbreaking real-life tragedy is now streaming for free on Channel 4. The Girl from Plainville explores the story of Michelle Carter and the suicide of her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III, with Elle Fanning and Colton Ryan in the starring roles. This eight-episode series delves into the troubling events leading to Conrad’s death and the ensuing high-profile trial, which also inspired a 2019 HBO documentary titled I Love You, Now Die and a 2018 film called Conrad & Michelle: If Words Could Kill.
The Real-Life Events
In February 2015, authorities charged Michelle Carter with involuntary manslaughter after Conrad’s suicide at age 18. His body was found in his car, filled with carbon monoxide, in July 2014. Earlier that November, Conrad had attempted suicide by ingesting a bottle of Tylenol.
The couple met in 2012 on a Florida vacation, sparking a long-distance relationship mostly maintained through text messages. Conrad struggled with anxiety and depression, sharing his suicidal thoughts with Michelle, who faced her own mental health challenges. Investigations uncovered hundreds of text messages from Michelle urging him to take his life.
On the day of his death, she texted: “You keep pushing it off and say you’ll do it but you never do. It’s always gonna be that way if you don’t take action.” Twelve hours later, she wrote: “Conrad I love you so much please tell me this is a joke. I’m so sorry I didn’t think you were being serious. I need you please answer me.”
During her 2017 trial, Michelle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to two and a half years in prison. She served 11 months before release for good behavior. The series traces the path to Conrad’s death and the courtroom drama that followed, captivating audiences with its intense narrative.
