Federal Prison Placed on Lockdown Over Missing Sweater

A federal correctional institution in Texas experienced a significant lockdown lasting nearly five hours due to a report of a stolen sweater belonging to Ghislaine Maxwell. The incident, which occurred in February, involved the 64-year-old inmate reporting a $30 fleece, purchased from the prison commissary, as missing.

The report of the missing item prompted authorities at FPC Bryan to order hundreds of incarcerated individuals back to their dormitories and maintain a lockdown status while a search of the minimum-security facility was conducted. The extensive search was only concluded when another inmate, a friend of Maxwell’s, came forward to claim responsibility for the garment, stating she had found it on a bench and intended to return it.

Inmate Claims Innocent Mistake Led to Lockdown

According to a source familiar with the situation, Maxwell had expressed concern that important identification and papers were in the sweater’s pockets. However, the source clarified that no theft had occurred, attributing the situation to a misunderstanding. “This lady had picked it up to give it back to her,” the source explained. “It was all an innocent mistake but they still kept everyone locked down for four or five hours for their investigation.”

The source further commented on the unusual nature of the lockdown, noting that while such measures are occasionally implemented for more serious incidents like fights or medical emergencies, a lost sweater is an unprecedented reason for a facility-wide shutdown.

Allegations of Special Treatment Persist

This incident comes amidst ongoing reports suggesting Maxwell is receiving preferential treatment within the federal correctional system. She is currently serving a 20-year sentence for her role in grooming young girls for her former associate, Jeffrey Epstein.

FPC Bryan, an all-female facility, is widely regarded as one of the most comfortable and secure institutions in the federal prison network. While most inmates share four-bed cubicles with two other individuals, Maxwell reportedly has a private living space with only one “bunkie.”

Exclusive Living Quarters and Personal Items

A source indicated that Maxwell utilizes the extra space in her room for a typewriter, an item not typically permitted in inmate quarters. “She uses the extra space for her typewriter, which is another thing that nobody else is allowed to keep in their room,” the source stated. “It’s an old electric IBM typewriter. She carries it around with her from the unit to her job at education.”

The source added that Maxwell places a “do not touch” sign on the typewriter when she is not using it in the classroom, suggesting she is using it for writing a book that she believes will lead to her exoneration.

Official Response and Maxwell’s Prison Experience

When contacted for comment, the Federal Bureau of Prisons stated they could not discuss individual inmates but emphasized that staff are forbidden from providing any form of preferential treatment. A spokesperson, Donald Murphy, affirmed, “Any deviation from this standard undermines public trust and the fair administration of justice. Violators may be subject to disciplinary actions, including removal from federal service and criminal prosecution.”

Maxwell’s initial period of incarceration at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn and a subsequent facility in Tallahassee, Florida, was reportedly challenging. Reports suggested she faced bullying from inmates, issues with personal hygiene, and disciplinary action for an unapproved media interview.

Her circumstances reportedly improved significantly after she agreed to brief the Department of Justice regarding her connections to Jeffrey Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019. Maxwell was transferred to FPC Bryan shortly after a meeting with then-Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. Officials cited “numerous threats against her life” in Florida as the reason for her relocation.

Daily Life at FPC Bryan

Maxwell, who received her education at Oxford, dedicates her time to leading female empowerment classes and has been assigned a classroom within the Adult Continuing Education department. Her days also include sunbathing and participating in bingo and running track activities. To prevent external observation, black tarps have been installed along the perimeter fencing.

Despite regulations against sunbathing, a source observed Maxwell engaging in the activity by rolling up her sleeves and shorts while sitting on benches, noting, “It’s one rule for the prison queen and another for everyone else.”

The 37-acre compound, housing 635 women primarily serving sentences of less than five years, experiences infrequent violence. Correspondence obtained from Maxwell suggests she views her time at Bryan positively, describing it as orderly, safe, and comfortable, even humorously noting the absence of “possums falling from the ceiling to fry unfortunately on ovens.”

Maxwell’s appeal to the Supreme Court was rejected in October. Her attorney, David Oscar Markus, has publicly described her as a “scapegoat” for Epstein’s crimes and has advocated for her pardon.
