Greg James, the 40-year-old Radio 1 Breakfast DJ, has successfully completed the first day of his grueling 1000km tandem bike ride for Comic Relief, cycling solo from Weymouth in Dorset toward Edinburgh.
Training Fueled by Entertainment
James shared that his intense training regimen, which began around Christmas, relied heavily on motivation from the racy TV series Heated Rivalry and Harry Styles’ new single Aperture.
“I’ve been training really hard on my bicycle from about Christmas, and every day has been leg day,” James stated. “It’s been a nightmare, but it’s all for a good cause and totally worth it.”
He added that he logged thousands of miles, either outdoors or on a stationary bike in his spare room, with a laptop streaming Heated Rivalry. “The song I just can’t stop listening to is Aperture by Harry Styles,” he continued. “I’ve also got a lot of Chemical Brothers because that’s just nice, upbeat, good dance music.”
Support from Radio Colleagues
Vernon Kay, Sara Cox, Jo Whiley, and Scott Mills have rallied behind James with encouragement, while Jamie Laing and Mollie King provided tips from their own charity challenges.
Personal Family Challenge
The ride follows a difficult week for James, whose father, known as ‘Big Al,’ suffered a stroke during a planned heart operation last Friday. James canceled his radio show to be with family but returned on Monday, updating listeners on his father’s condition.
“Thank you to Sam and Danni for Friday, as there was a slight mishap with my dad,” James said. “My dad’s not very well at the minute. I know that he would want me to get back on the show. And he’s still with us, which is good.”
He described his father as ‘fighting hard’ and progressing in ‘small steps’ toward recovery. James visited him in the ICU over the weekend, praising NHS staff, including a doctor at his bedside.
“Particularly the handsome doctor that he’s having by his bedside,” James noted lightheartedly. “That’s one of the mad things about life—sometimes the best thing is to be in a WhatsApp group talking about how fit the doctor is.”
Despite the setback, James remains committed to the Red Nose Day challenge, emphasizing the support from fans and colleagues during tough times.
