Hodgkinson Abandons 400m Final Amidst Tears
Keely Hodgkinson, the reigning Olympic 800m champion, made a dramatic and emotional withdrawal from the 400m final at the UK Athletics Championships. The decision came just moments before the race was set to commence on Sunday at the Alexander Stadium.
Hodgkinson had been utilizing the shorter 400m distance as a strategic tool to enhance her first-lap speed, with the ultimate goal of challenging the 800m world record this summer. Despite successfully qualifying from the heats, the athlete made the difficult choice to step off the track moments before the starting gun.
Hodgkinson Explains Difficult Decision
The 24-year-old athlete expressed that her withdrawal was a precautionary measure, prioritizing her upcoming major competitions. Hodgkinson is slated to compete in the Novuna London Athletics Meet next month and aims to perform well at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham in August.
Speaking about her decision, Hodgkinson stated, “I wasn’t feeling 100 per cent standing on the start line so I made the tough decision to step away and not race.” She further emphasized her long-term vision, adding, “I didn’t want to risk anything ahead of this summer.”
Hunter Bell Sets Championship Record in 800m
In a remarkable display of performance, Hodgkinson’s training partner, Georgia Hunter Bell, claimed a commanding victory in the 800m final. Hunter Bell set a new championship record with a time of 1:55.93, positioning herself firmly in the conversation for a potential world record.
“I wanted to do a hard run and see where I’m at,” Hunter Bell commented on her race. “It was a bit of an exercise in getting some answers to some questions. I am really happy. I have just realised over the last few years there is no point putting limits on anything. Everything is getting faster and faster.”
The 400m final itself was won by British record holder Amber Anning, who also set a new championship record with a time of 50.16 seconds, narrowly beating Yemi Mary John and rising talent Charlotte Henrich.
