Kieran McKenna Departs Ipswich Town Managerial Role
Kieran McKenna has announced his departure as manager of Ipswich Town after a highly successful four-and-a-half-year tenure. The club is set to return to the Premier League next season following McKenna’s leadership. The 40-year-old manager plans to take a break from the sport and is not currently linked to any specific new positions.
A Meteoric Rise at Portman Road
McKenna’s time at the helm of the Suffolk club has been nothing short of extraordinary. He took over in December 2021 when Ipswich was struggling in League One. Under his guidance, the team achieved consecutive promotions, culminating in their return to the top flight by May 2024. This impressive feat positioned McKenna as one of the most sought-after managers in European football. Despite signing a new contract with Ipswich, the team was unable to maintain its Premier League status during the 2024-25 season.
Concluding on a High Note
McKenna’s departure comes after a strong finish to the last season, where Ipswich secured second place in the Championship. A decisive victory on the final day against QPR confirmed their latest promotion. It is understood that McKenna’s decision to step down was influenced by the opportunity to conclude his tenure on a high note, having attained a legendary status among the club’s supporters. Reports suggest he made this decision early last week following a post-season break. The club will reportedly be financially protected should he accept a new role in the near future.
McKenna’s Statement and Future Plans
Reflecting on his time at the club, McKenna stated, “When you have the connection that we have built at this club there is never a good time to say goodbye. However, having achieved a second promotion to the Premier League last season, with another memorable final day in our stadium, and after reflection over the last couple of weeks, I feel this is the right time for me to step aside. I do so with great pride at the incredible progress we have made and with huge hope and optimism for the future of this club.” He further added, “After giving so much to the role over the previous five seasons, I now look forward to taking a break from management and dedicating some time to my family, who have been with me every step of my career so far.”
Club’s Acknowledgement and Future Outlook
McKenna initially joined Ipswich from a first-team coaching role at Manchester United. In 2024, he was reportedly a target for managerial vacancies at prominent clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Brighton. Ipswich chairman, Mark Ashton, commented on McKenna’s impact: “The mark he, his staff and his players have made on Ipswich Town and its community will live forever. It has captured a generation. Like so many, I am of course gutted that our journey together has come to an end, but I understand and respect the decision he has made after five incredibly intense years.”
The club is not anticipated to announce a replacement immediately, though the position is expected to attract significant interest. Ipswich is backed by a consortium of US-based investors and is preparing to open a new training ground before the upcoming season.
