Lindsey Vonn’s pursuit of an Olympic downhill medal concludes in heartbreak after a high-risk run turns disastrous during the women’s final in Cortina.

The Dramatic Crash

Thirteen seconds into her descent, Vonn’s right shoulder strikes the third gate, causing her 41-year-old frame to spin 180 degrees. She lands backward, slams into the snow, flips again, and her previously injured left knee absorbs the brunt of the impact.

Vonn lies in agony on the slope, her cries of ‘Oh my God’ echoing across the mountain and into homes worldwide. Medical teams attend to her for 10 minutes before a rescue helicopter airlifts her on a stretcher high above the Dolomites to a hospital in Innsbruck, Austria.

Background of Risk and Resilience

Just nine days earlier, on January 30, Vonn ruptures her ACL in a prior crash. Despite the injury, she insists she is fit to compete and posts the third-fastest time in Saturday’s final practice run, fueling hopes of a podium finish on the challenging 2,572-meter course with a 760-meter drop.

The two-time Olympic champion, seeking a second gold 16 years after her first, wears bib number 13 for the 13th run of the day. She arrives with one functional leg, accompanied by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Martin Roche, who previously rebuilt her right knee with titanium.

Reactions from Peers and Experts

Tina Maze, two-time Olympic skiing champion, comments on TNT: “We all know the difficulties Lindsey faced in recent days. She risked too much, and this kind of crash can happen. If you’re not healthy, consequences worsen. Lindsey pushed forward regardless. It’s tough for her family, teammates, and everyone involved.”

Former alpine skier Chemmy Alcott shares her distress: “I feel guilty for being this emotional. I never thought it would end like this, motionless at the piste’s side. The top section challenges even fit athletes, and she only had one good knee. It’s brutal for her family, team, and herself.”

Race Results and Context

As Vonn crashes, U.S. teammate Breezy Johnson sets the pace at 1:36.10, securing gold ahead of Germany’s Emma Aicher and Italy’s Sofia Goggia. Johnson, who overcame serious knee injuries and a 14-month doping suspension ending in 2024, claims the medal Vonn targeted.

Vonn’s bold comeback from retirement captivates fans, even drawing attention from figures like Snoop Dogg. Yet, experts had warned of the dangers on this unforgiving terrain.
