Former Republic of Ireland and Wolves manager Mick McCarthy has reignited a long-standing feud with broadcaster Piers Morgan, publicly calling him a “wanker” on a recent podcast. McCarthy stated he had been “waiting 15 years” for the opportunity to deliver the insult, stemming from a controversial decision Morgan has held against him since 2009.

The Genesis of the Feud: A Controversial Team Selection

The dispute dates back to February 2009, when Mick McCarthy, then manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, made a decision that deeply angered Piers Morgan. Morgan, a vocal Arsenal supporter, felt that McCarthy deliberately undermined Arsenal’s Premier League title aspirations by fielding a weakened team against Manchester United. At the time, Arsenal and Manchester United were direct rivals in the title race.

McCarthy, whose Wolves side was facing a demanding fixture list, opted to make 10 changes to his starting lineup for the away game against Manchester United. His rationale was to rest key players for crucial upcoming matches against Tottenham Hotspur and Burnley, which he believed were more winnable and vital for securing Wolves’ Premier League survival.

Manchester United went on to win the match against a depleted Wolves side comfortably, 3-0. While this result was seen by Morgan as a betrayal of sporting integrity and a direct blow to Arsenal’s title hopes, McCarthy defended his actions. He pointed to the fact that his strategy proved successful in the subsequent games, with Wolves securing victories against Tottenham and Burnley, ultimately ensuring their safety in the top flight that season.

Morgan’s Enduring Grievance

Despite the passage of time and the eventual success of McCarthy’s tactical gamble in preserving Wolves’ Premier League status, Piers Morgan has consistently maintained his disapproval of the decision. He views the move as an “appalling abrogation of duty” by McCarthy, arguing that a manager’s responsibility includes fielding the best available team to entertain fans and compete fiercely, especially when it impacts a title race.

Morgan reiterated his stance during the recent podcast appearance, doubling down on his earlier criticisms. He suggested that McCarthy’s decision allowed Manchester United an easy victory, which he felt directly impacted his beloved Arsenal’s chances of winning the league title that year.

McCarthy’s Retort and the Long-Awaited Insult

Responding to Morgan’s persistent criticism on the “Sports Uncensored” show, Mick McCarthy expressed his frustration with Morgan’s approach. McCarthy accused Morgan of intentionally antagonizing people with his comments, suggesting that this is a pattern of behavior Morgan exhibits.

McCarthy defended his managerial autonomy, stating, “My job is to win games… If I’m a manager, it’s my right to manage that team how I see fit and get results.” He directly challenged Morgan’s perspective, implying that Morgan’s criticism stemmed from a place of personal grievance rather than objective analysis. “You weren’t good enough, so you blame me, which is really bad on your part,” McCarthy remarked.

Adding a touch of dark humor, Morgan referenced the infamous 2002 World Cup incident involving then-Republic of Ireland manager McCarthy and his fiery player Roy Keane. Morgan quipped, “Now I know what Roy Keane’s problem was!” This alluded to the well-documented fallout between Keane and McCarthy, which saw Keane sent home from the tournament.

However, the climax of the exchange came when McCarthy, after detailing his justification for the 2009 team selection, finally delivered the insult he claimed to have been harboring. “I’ve been waiting how many years? 15 years to say it,” McCarthy declared. “You know, I’ve been waiting 15 years to call you a wanker, so happy days!”

Hypocrisy and Managerial Decisions

When questioned about how he would have reacted if the roles were reversed – specifically, if a team challenging for the title had seemingly rolled over for one of Wolves’ relegation rivals – McCarthy acknowledged a potential double standard. He conceded, “I’m going to moan like a b***h, like you do! There we are right there, we’re all hypocrites!” This admission highlighted the subjective nature of fan and pundit reactions to controversial sporting decisions.

McCarthy’s comments underscore the intense pressures and subjective judgments inherent in professional football management. Managers often face scrutiny over team selections, especially when perceived competitive integrity is at stake. While Morgan viewed McCarthy’s 2009 decision as a slight against Arsenal and a dereliction of duty, McCarthy maintained it was a strategic move to prioritize his own team’s survival, a decision he felt was ultimately vindicated by results.

The exchange serves as a vivid reminder of the lingering grudges and passionate rivalries that can persist within the world of sports, even years after the events that sparked them. McCarthy’s long-awaited insult to Morgan highlights the deeply personal nature of these disputes, particularly when they involve high-profile media personalities with strong allegiances.
