Motherwell 1-1 Rangers: Dramatic Late Equalizer Shocks Rohl’s Side

In a thrilling Scottish Premiership clash, 10-man Motherwell secured a deserved point against Rangers with an 89th-minute equalizer from defender Stephen Welsh, denying Danny Rohl’s team a vital victory in the title race.

Rangers struck first through Nicolas Raskin’s clinical finish early on, but Motherwell dominated possession and created numerous chances. The Lanarkshire side, managed by Jens Berthel Askou, played Rangers off the park for much of the match, echoing their strong performance against Celtic last month.

First Half: Rangers Edge Ahead Amid Motherwell Pressure

Motherwell nearly opened the scoring in the fifth minute after a sweeping move involving Callum Ward, Stephen O’Donnell, and Callum Slattery set up Emmanuel Longelo, whose shot forced a save from Jack Butland.

Rangers capitalized swiftly. Mohamed Diomande drove forward from midfield and threaded a precise pass to Raskin, who ghosted behind the defense and slotted home into the bottom corner—the first goal Motherwell conceded at home since October.

The hosts responded aggressively, pinning Rangers back. Slattery’s long-range free-kick tested Butland, while Tochi Chukwuani’s counter-attack rocket narrowly missed. Tawanda Maswanhise, Motherwell’s prolific striker with 21 goals this season, hit the post after a pinpoint ball from O’Donnell.

Rangers wasted a chance to double their lead when Welsh’s clearance fell to Youssef Chermiti, who blazed straight at Ward.

Second Half: Red Card and Welsh’s Heroics

Rangers started the second half stronger, but Motherwell reignited with Elijah Just forcing a save from Butland. The game turned in the 75th minute when Lukas Fadinger received a straight red card for fouling Mikey Moore, confirmed by VAR.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Motherwell refused to yield. With stoppage time approaching, a hopeful ball into the box reached Welsh, who blasted home from six yards to spark wild celebrations among the 11,209 fans at Fir Park.

Title Race Implications

This draw hurts Rangers, who led for most of the match but couldn’t hold firm. They face Hearts at Ibrox next, a must-win to stay in contention. Motherwell’s resilience positions them as potential spoilers in the race, especially with Welsh—on loan from Celtic—delivering a blow to their parent club’s rivals.

Celtic also grabbed a late win against Livingston, intensifying the pressure on Rohl’s improving but inconsistent side.

Key Performers

  • Motherwell: Slattery (8), O’Donnell (7), McGinn (7), Welsh (7), Longelo (7)
  • Rangers: Butland (7), Souttar (6), Raskin (6)

Match Details: Referee Steven McLean. Motherwell (4-2-3-1): Ward; O’Donnell (Sparrow 69), McGinn, Welsh, Longelo; Fadinger, Watt (Priestman 46); Slattery, Just, Said (Bjorgolfsson 69); Maswanhise.
