Homeowners are being advised to incorporate a common household item, mouthwash, into their laundry routine this June for a surprisingly effective cleaning solution. An appliance maintenance expert has revealed this unconventional tip aimed at eliminating germs and tackling unpleasant odours within washing machines.
The Hidden Grime in Your Washing Machine
Despite regular use of hot water and detergent, washing machines can accumulate dirt, grime, and bacteria over time, creating a breeding ground for mould. Ian Palmer-Smith, an appliance repair specialist, highlights that a simple addition of mouthwash can serve as an economical and straightforward method for maintaining machine hygiene. He suggests this ‘maintenance wash’ should be performed quarterly.
Expert Advice for Machine Cleanliness
Palmer-Smith elaborates on the necessity of deep cleaning washing machines every one to three months to combat bacteria, mould, and detergent residue. He recommends a monthly maintenance wash involving an empty, hot cycle with a specialized washing machine cleaner. For those without a dedicated cleaner, white vinegar or baking soda are presented as viable alternatives.
Using Mouthwash as a Cleaning Agent
Regarding the mouthwash method, Palmer-Smith states, “Mouthwash can also be used to clean your washing machine. Pour half a cup of alcohol-based mouthwash directly into the drum or the detergent drawer, and run an empty cycle. This allows the antiseptic properties to kill bacteria, sanitise the drum, and leave it smelling fresh.” He advises pairing this with cleaning the detergent drawer and filter, as these areas are prone to rapid soiling.
Beyond the Machine: Freshening Laundry Loads
The cleaning expert also suggests using mouthwash to disinfect laundry itself, particularly for items with persistent odours such as activewear and socks. This application is said to help eliminate lingering smells and bacteria.
Important Considerations for Mouthwash Use
Crucially, Palmer-Smith emphasizes the importance of using a colorless mouthwash to avoid staining clothes or the washing machine’s interior. He also cautions against overuse, noting that excessive amounts can lead to over-sudsing and potential overflow if it reacts with detergent. Such overflows could result in internal damage and costly repairs.
He adds a further note of caution: “Additionally, high alcohol content in some mouthwashes can degrade certain fabrics, so it’s best not to use this tip on delicate clothing.” Vigilance during the washing cycle is recommended when employing this cleaning hack to prevent any adverse reactions.
