Marks & Spencer frequently launches food products that capture widespread attention on social media, from strawberries and cream sandwiches to indulgent doughnuts. This year, the popular Outrageously Chocolatey Custard Cream Biscuity Egg returns as a hollow, custard cream-shaped treat filled with crunchy biscuit pieces, white chocolate, and custard truffle.

Navigating the Crowds to Secure the Egg

Shoppers flock to M&S Food Halls during Easter, especially around the chocolate displays packed with eggs, oversized bars, and animal-shaped treats. Grabbing the 320g egg from a high shelf proved straightforward despite the bustle. At £12, it offers good value for a novelty item, comparable to similar premium options like a 275g almond croissant egg priced at £15.

Unboxing: Sturdy Design and Surprising Lightness

The golden-yellow box and protective plastic casing ensured the egg arrived home intact after a 20-minute walk and train ride. Its lightweight feel defied expectations of a heavier treat, and the surface featured classic custard cream swirls along with the M&S logo. Breaking into it required some effort, highlighting its robust construction.

Taste Test: Overpowered by Sweetness

Expectations ran high for a perfect blend of shortcake crunch, creamy custard, and smooth chocolate. However, one word captures the experience: sickly. Even for those with a strong sweet tooth, the intense sweetness overwhelmed the flavors.

The profile echoes Kinder chocolate, combining milk and white varieties with scattered biscuit bits. The custard truffle lacked prominent vanilla notes, overshadowed by cloying white chocolate. Better balance could come from more biscuit, reduced white chocolate, and a touch of darker milk or 50% dark chocolate to let the custard stand out.

Despite the flavor imbalance, the chocolate quality shines—creamy and premium. The egg’s stunning appearance makes it a visual standout, ideal as a fun gift for sweet-tooth enthusiasts.

Final Verdict

This treat prioritizes style and novelty over flavor depth. Fans of ultra-sweet chocolate may enjoy it, but traditional custard cream lovers might prefer the classic biscuit instead.
