Intensive Search Underway for Missing Arizona Woman
Law enforcement has escalated efforts to locate Nancy Guthrie, 84-year-old mother of Today Show anchor Savannah Guthrie, who disappeared from her Tucson-area home Saturday evening between 9:30 and 9:45 PM. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed homicide investigators have joined the case after discovering what officials described as “concerning evidence” at the scene.
Multi-Agency Search Operation
Search teams are deploying drones, aircraft, and K-9 units from Customs and Border Protection to scour the Catalina Foothills area. “This investigation stands out due to initial findings at the residence,” Sheriff Nanos stated during a press briefing. “While we hope to find Ms. Guthrie unharmed, the circumstances warrant serious concern.”
Vulnerable Adult Alert
Authorities have classified Nancy Guthrie as a vulnerable adult due to her age, though officials clarified she has no known cognitive impairments. The missing woman is described as 5’5″ tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
Family Cooperation
The Guthrie family released a statement confirming their collaboration with investigators: “This is an active missing persons case, and we’re working closely with law enforcement to bring Nancy home.”
Mother-Daughter Bond
Savannah Guthrie has frequently acknowledged her mother’s influence during her television career. During a 2022 Today Show segment celebrating Nancy’s 80th birthday, the anchor credited her professional success to her mother’s parenting: “Her selflessness and unwavering confidence created the foundation for everything we’ve achieved.”
In previous interviews, Savannah recalled her mother’s emotional support during challenging times: “When motherhood didn’t happen quickly for me, her steadfast belief that I’d become a parent sustained me through difficult years. She always insisted, ‘You’ll be a wonderful mom’ – that faith meant everything.”
Investigators urge anyone with information about Nancy Guthrie’s whereabouts to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department immediately.
