Drain blockages often catch homeowners off guard, leading to overflowing sinks and potential flooding. Early signs include slow-draining water in sinks, bathtubs, or showers. Plumbing experts emphasize one simple rule: never pour grease down the drain to keep pipes clear and flowing freely.

The Primary Cause of Clogged Drains

Grease and cooking oils top the list of drain-clogging offenders. These substances cool, solidify, and adhere to pipe walls, gradually building up and trapping food particles or debris. MK Robinson, a Newcastle-based plumbing company, explains: “Grease and cooking oil are significant culprits behind clogged kitchen drains. They solidify and cling to the inside of pipes, gradually forming a blockage. Instead of pouring used grease down the drain, let it solidify in a container and dispose of it in the trash.”

Food scraps, butter, salad dressings, cheese, and milk contribute similarly in kitchens. Soap residues from showers and baths also combine with fats to create slimy buildup. Bathroom clogs often stem from makeup, sunscreen, coconut oil, lotions, and body butters.

Daily Habits to Maintain Clear Drains

Prevent issues by scraping plates directly into the trash before soaking dishes. Wipe excess lotions or makeup onto a towel prior to rinsing. These quick steps stop greasy buildup and extend the life of your pipes.

Effective Fixes for Early Blockages

When water drains slowly, act fast to dissolve minor clogs. Boiling water offers a straightforward solution. MK Robinson notes: “Pouring a kettle of hot water down the drain can be a surprisingly effective way to prevent clogs, especially in the kitchen. Hot water helps to melt and loosen greasy build-up that can contribute to blockages over time.”

This method melts fats, soaps, and oils while loosening debris. For stubborn grease, add washing-up liquid, which naturally breaks down oils. Soda crystals provide a chemical-free alternative to harsh cleaners.

Consistent vigilance against greasy disposals ensures drains remain unclogged, avoiding costly plumber calls and water damage.
