Motorists opt to scrap older vehicles rather than face steep vehicle tax increases, leading to widespread write-offs across UK roads. A £735 tax threshold currently affects hundreds of thousands of cars, pushing owners to abandon them amid refusal to cover the escalating costs. Many resist upgrading to electric alternatives, choosing instead to retain their aging models, some equipped with larger engines that trigger substantial first-year charges—up to £5,490 based on emissions.
Environmental considerations play a role, as experts argue maintaining an older car on the road can reduce overall emissions compared to manufacturing a new one. Analysis reveals that desirable models from two decades ago now hold minimal value and face scrapping due to prohibitive tax bills. Vehicles emitting over 225g of CO2 per kilometer incur high Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) rates: £430 for 201-225g/km, £735 for 226-255g/km, and £750 for over 255g/km. These bands will adjust upward in April 2026, with the £735 rate rising to £760 and the £750 to £790.
Cars Beyond High-End SUVs Affected
The impact extends beyond luxury SUVs to everyday family vehicles, including Ford Mondeos, Saabs, Volkswagen Golfs, and Vauxhall Zafiras. Owners report ditching these cars because annual taxes rival or exceed their market value. Producing a medium-sized new car generates over 17 tonnes of CO2e—equivalent to nearly three years of typical household gas and electricity use.
Mike Berners-Lee and Duncan Clark state: “With this in mind, unless you do very high mileage or have a real gas-guzzler, it generally makes sense to keep your old car for as long as it is reliable – and to look after it carefully to extend its life as long as possible. If you make a car last to 200,000 miles rather than 100,000, then the emissions for each mile the car does in its lifetime may drop by as much as 50%, as a result of getting more distance out of the initial manufacturing emissions.”

Pre-2001 cars face taxation based on engine size: £229 annually for those under 1,549cc, and £360 for larger engines, regardless of make. Emissions-based bands apply from 2001 onward, though vehicles registered between March 2001 and March 23, 2006, cap at the current Band K rate of £430.

All-wheel-drive choices such as the Land Rover Freelander or Subaru Forester may exceed £800 annually in tax for certain variants.
Wayne Lamport, who operates Stone Cold Classics in Kent specializing in vehicles from this period, notes: “We have to be very careful when we buy stock which is 2006 or more recent. Cars such as a Jaguar X-Type are great, but who wants to pay more than £700 for the annual tax? It doesn’t take many years of ownership to spend the value of the car. One example is the Chrysler PT Cruiser. A lot of people love them and think it will be a novelty, but they go off the idea when they realise the annual cost of taxing it. A lot of these cars are virtually unsellable.”
