Bathroom taps endure daily use and constant water exposure, making them prime targets for limescale buildup. Hard water, rich in minerals, leaves chalky calcium and magnesium deposits as it evaporates. These deposits not only mar the appearance but also harm taps over time, causing reduced water flow, leaks, and drips.

Dangers of Untreated Limescale

Cleaning specialists warn that encrusted limescale on chrome fittings worsens with time, becoming harder to remove. It slows water flow, causes erratic spraying, and fosters bacteria growth. Drinking from affected taps risks ingesting harmful microbes, so regular cleaning prevents thick coatings and maintains hygiene.

Limescale accumulation speed varies by local water hardness and cleaning frequency.

Natural Lemon Solution

Lemons offer a cost-effective fix at around 35p each, thanks to their potent citric acid that dissolves limescale without harsh chemicals. This natural method restores taps to a sparkling finish.

Effective Cleaning Steps

To remove limescale:

  • Squeeze fresh lemon juice onto a cloth or kitchen roll.
  • Wrap it around the tap, securing firmly, and leave for one hour.
  • For spouts, push a lemon half onto the end and let it soak for hours or overnight.
  • Alternatively, fill a small plastic bag with juice, seal over the tap, and allow penetration.
  • Remove the wrap, wipe clean—limescale lifts easily. Repeat for stubborn spots.

Experts recommend targeting tricky areas like spouts, where white deposits gather. For best results:

  • Soak a cloth in lemon juice (or vinegar) and wrap securely with an elastic band for one hour.
  • Squeeze occasionally to refresh the acid.
  • Wipe away dissolved scale.
  • For spout remnants, fit a lemon half tightly, wait another hour, then rinse and scrub gently—use a scouring pad only on the underside to avoid scratches.
