Royal Family’s Deep Affection for “The Archers” Revealed
A friendly rivalry appears to exist within the royal family regarding who holds the title of the most dedicated fan of the beloved BBC Radio 4 drama, The Archers. The program, celebrating its 75th anniversary this year, has garnered significant admiration from members of the monarchy, with both the late Princess Margaret and Queen Camilla showcasing their ardent support.
Princess Margaret’s Devotion
Princess Margaret was such a devoted listener that she made a guest appearance on the world’s longest-running soap opera in 1984, portraying herself. Reports suggest her passion was so intense that she would occasionally silence Queen Elizabeth II if her sister attempted to converse during an episode, demonstrating her commitment to the unfolding storylines of Ambridge.
Queen Camilla’s “Archers Addict” Status
Currently, the cast of The Archers believes Queen Camilla rivals Princess Margaret in her devotion. Describing herself as an “Archers addict,” Queen Camilla herself has appeared on the show, playing herself in an episode in 2011. She has also engaged with the cast on multiple occasions, further cementing her status as a notable fan.
Cast Members Share Encounters
Tim Bentinck, who has portrayed patriarch David Archer since 1982, shared an anecdote about the King mentioning Queen Camilla’s enthusiasm. During his MBE investiture in 2018, Bentinck recounted that the King leaned in and remarked, “My wife would be so jealous. She’s such a fan.”
Sunny Ormonde, the voice behind the spirited character Lilian Bellamy since 2000, also recalled her meeting with Queen Camilla during the 2011 visit. “She came into the show and was absolutely delightful,” Ormonde stated. “She asked me where my [distinctive] laugh came from. I said to her: ‘From the bottom of a gin bottle, ma’am.'” Ormonde added that The Archers provides a source of comfort for the Queen, who has expressed that during times of stress, she can return home, relax, and listen to the program.
A Landmark Anniversary and Live Tour
In commemoration of its 75th anniversary, the cast of The Archers is embarking on a UK tour. The live shows will feature specially written scenes, interactive question-and-answer sessions with the audience, and demonstrations of how sound effects are created. Vanessa Nuttall, the sound effects artist, will be on hand, equipped with a rubber glove and a bucket of natural yoghurt, ready to replicate the sound of a calf being born.
Memorable Royal Interactions
While Tim Bentinck was not present during Princess Margaret’s guest appearance, he did have a memorable encounter with the Princess Royal at an agricultural show. He recounted performing a reggae rendition of The Archers‘ theme tune on stage. “I looked at the audience and there she was, looking at me as if I was completely barking mad,” he recalled. When asked if she swayed to the music, he noted, “She was frowning.”
Bentinck described his interactions with Queen Camilla as warmer, finding her “so easy and so lovely.” He shared a recent exchange where he playfully raised his eyebrow, acknowledging her royal status, to which she responded with a knowing look.
The Show’s Broad Appeal
The royal following of The Archers, according to Bentinck, lends the program a certain prestige. However, its appeal extends far beyond royal circles, resonating with everyday listeners such as taxi drivers who have expressed their recognition of the familiar voices.
Beyond Ambridge: Tim Bentinck’s Diverse Career
Tim Bentinck’s own career has been notably diverse. Trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he shared a flat with Daniel Day-Lewis during their first year of studies. “He was just Dan, one of us. Nobody had any idea that he was going to get three Oscars,” Bentinck commented on his former roommate.
Bentinck has also contributed to the television series The Crown, initially securing a voiceover role as Sir John Betjeman in season three. He later appeared on screen as Henry “Porchey” Herbert, Earl of Carnarvon, in season six, though he expressed some disappointment when one of his filmed scenes was ultimately cut.
His voice work includes portraying James Bond in the video game The World Is Not Enough and providing the iconic “mind the gap” announcements for a line on the London Underground, a role he found particularly special as his sons would hear his voice while commuting.
The Archers: Live at 75, a new theatre production featuring live episodes and sound effects, is currently touring the UK until November. Further details can be found at fane.co.uk/the-archers.
