World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler has expressed strong confidence in his friend Sam Burns, believing it’s only a matter of time before Burns secures his maiden major championship title. This endorsement comes as Burns holds a significant two-shot lead heading into the final round of The Open Championship, a position that echoes his near-miss at the recent US Open.
Scheffler Praises Burns’ Enduring Talent
Speaking after his own third round at Royal Birkdale, Scheffler was asked about any perceived changes in Burns’ game that might explain his elevated performance. Scheffler, a four-time major winner himself, offered a straightforward assessment: “He’s really good at golf.” He elaborated on their close relationship, noting that spending extensive time with Burns allows him to fully appreciate the depth of his talent.
“He’s someone I spend so much time around. I know how good he is,” Scheffler stated. “Sometimes you just need to continue to build that experience and put yourself in the positions. He was close at the US Open last year. He was close again at the US Open this year.”
Scheffler highlighted the difficulty of consistently winning at the highest level of professional golf. He acknowledged Burns’ persistent efforts throughout the current season, observing that Burns has been “knocking on the door a few times this year and hasn’t been able to get it done.” However, Scheffler emphasized the importance of continued opportunity and perseverance.
“But like it’s just a matter of continuing to give yourself opportunities, continuing to knock on the door,” he advised. “Sam’s a guy that’s been on the last few Ryder Cups, last few Presidents Cups, and he’s a guy that I see all the time. He’s got a ton of talent. For me it’s just a matter of time until he gets it done in one of these.”
Scheffler reiterated that he hasn’t observed a dramatic shift in Burns’ technique. Instead, he believes the key lies in Burns’ ability to repeatedly place himself in contention during major tournaments. “I think sometimes you just need to continue to put yourself in these situations. He’s definitely got the talent,” Scheffler concluded.
Burns’ Strong Performance at The Open
Burns has mounted an impressive challenge at The Open Championship. After an opening round of 73, he responded with a spectacular 62 in the second round, equalling a major championship record. This performance, combined with a solid third round, has propelled him to the top of the leaderboard, holding a two-stroke advantage over his nearest competitors heading into Sunday’s final round.
His performance this week offers a strong indication that his major breakthrough could be imminent. The 36-hole score of 137 is a testament to his current form, setting him up for a potentially historic victory at the historic Royal Birkdale course.
Scheffler’s Own Tournament Status and Thoughts on DeChambeau
While Scheffler is not directly competing for the lead, he remains in contention himself. He sits tied for 11th place, six shots behind Burns, after posting consistent rounds of 68, 68, and 70. As the defending champion from last year’s event at Royal Portrush, Scheffler is still in a position to potentially challenge for the title.
During his media availability, Scheffler was also questioned about a controversial two-stroke penalty issued to fellow American Bryson DeChambeau during the second round. Scheffler indicated he had thoughts on the matter but chose not to elaborate publicly at that moment.
“I was out practising. I was playing with him yesterday,” Scheffler said when asked about the penalty. “I don’t really have a ton to say on it. Actually, I do have a ton to say. I haven’t decided exactly what I want to say publicly yet. I do have some thoughts. I just… I don’t really feel like now is the time or place for me to comment. We’re in the middle of a tournament, and I’m focused on what I need to do. I need to go out tomorrow and shoot a low round. I’m not really going to expand on it too much.”
The Road Ahead for Burns and Scheffler
The final round of The Open Championship promises significant drama. Sam Burns will be looking to convert his lead into a maiden major title, building on his recent strong performances. Scottie Scheffler, meanwhile, will aim to climb the leaderboard and potentially defend his title, while also keeping an eye on the developing story of his friend’s potential major breakthrough.
The narrative surrounding Burns at this Open is one of a talented player on the cusp of greatness. Scheffler’s public support underscores the respect Burns commands within the golfing elite, suggesting that his major championship aspirations are well within reach.
