Senator John Fetterman has publicly urged his fellow Democrat, Senator Bernie Sanders, to reconsider his recent candidate endorsements, particularly those that have drawn significant controversy. Fetterman specifically called on Sanders to “humble himself” following endorsements of a candidate facing sexual assault allegations and another who has made statements perceived as sympathetic to Hamas and critical of Israel.

Fetterman’s Criticism of Sanders’ Endorsements

During a television appearance on Saturday, Fetterman, representing Pennsylvania, expressed strong disapproval of Sanders’ choices. He argued that these endorsements could potentially harm the Democratic Party’s electoral prospects. Fetterman highlighted two specific endorsements that fueled his criticism: Graham Platner, a candidate for the Maine Senate who withdrew from the race amid allegations of sexual assault, and Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate in Michigan’s primary who has faced accusations of being “pro-Hamas” and “anti-American” due to his remarks about the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

“Humble yourself, Bernie,” Fetterman stated, addressing Sanders directly. He elaborated on his concerns, saying, “You just pushed an accused rapist up in Maine and now you’re pushing essentially a pro-Hamas candidate that’s been anti-American and deeply anti-Israel.”

Focus on Abdul El-Sayed’s Stance

A significant portion of Fetterman’s critique was directed at El-Sayed’s public statements regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict. Earlier in the year, El-Sayed told CNN that he viewed both Israel and Hamas as “evil.” He stated, “Yes, killing tens of thousands of people makes you pretty damn evil. It’s not how evil is this one versus that one – Hamas: Evil, Israeli government: Evil. We can say both.”

Fetterman also referenced a recent Pew Research poll indicating that 44 percent of American Muslims hold a favorable view of Hamas. He expressed disbelief that El-Sayed had not directly addressed this statistic, suggesting it reflected a concerning trend within certain segments of the party. El-Sayed is currently competing against Democratic candidate Haley Stevens in a closely watched primary election in Michigan.

The Case of Graham Platner

The endorsement of Graham Platner also drew Fetterman’s ire. Platner, who was running for the Maine Senate, withdrew from his campaign the previous week. This decision followed a sexual assault allegation, which he has denied, and came after a series of earlier controversies. Platner released a video statement explaining that the “immense amount of weight” he was under had become unsustainable, leading to his withdrawal.

Prior to his withdrawal, Sanders had defended Platner on Capitol Hill. Reports had surfaced detailing sexually explicit text messages exchanged by Platner early in his marriage. Sanders, in response to questions about the matter, suggested a focus on broader economic issues, stating, “We got a housing crisis. People can’t afford healthcare, they can’t afford groceries, they can’t afford to fill up their gas tanks. And I think it’s important for us to focus on the issues facing working families a little bit more than Graham Platner’s marriage.”

Broader Concerns About Party Direction

Fetterman’s criticism of Sanders’ endorsements is part of a larger pattern of concern he has expressed regarding the direction of the Democratic Party. He has previously voiced apprehension about what he describes as the party embracing “Communists” and believes such endorsements could negatively impact national Democratic campaigns.

Fetterman has been vocal about his commitment to supporting Israel, stating that if the Democratic Party officially becomes an “anti-Israel party,” he would consider leaving. He emphasized his long-standing concern for the party’s stance on the issue, particularly regarding its relationship with Israel.

Sanders Defends His Picks

Meanwhile, Senator Sanders has continued to campaign for his chosen candidates. At a rally in Detroit with El-Sayed, Sanders criticized El-Sayed’s opponent, Haley Stevens. He accused Stevens of prioritizing the interests of the “billionaire class” over those of working families. “In all due respect to Haley Stevens, everybody knows that this is not an election between her and Abdul. This is an election between Abdul and the billionaire class. That is what this election is about,” Sanders asserted.

Sanders highlighted the significant financial investment made by wealthy donors against El-Sayed, noting that “tens of millions of dollars” had been spent. He questioned the motive behind such spending, suggesting it was to defeat a candidate who challenges established economic interests.

Party Divisions on Foreign Policy

The debate between Fetterman and Sanders underscores a growing division within the Democratic Party, particularly concerning foreign policy and the conflict in the Middle East. Recent votes in the U.S. House of Representatives have illustrated this split, with a notable number of Democrats voting against or abstaining on measures related to aid for Israel.

Fetterman’s public statements suggest he believes the party is at a crossroads, and he is advocating for a stance that he feels aligns with core Democratic values and maintains strong ties with allies like Israel. His call for Sanders to “recalibrate” his endorsement strategy reflects a desire for a more unified and strategically sound approach to candidate selection within the party.

Conclusion

The public disagreement between Senators Fetterman and Sanders highlights internal party tensions regarding candidate vetting and policy stances, particularly on foreign affairs. Fetterman’s call for Sanders to “humble himself” and reconsider his endorsement strategy points to a broader debate about the future direction and electoral viability of the Democratic Party, especially as key primary elections approach.
