Sarah Beeny, the 54-year-old TV presenter, offers candid insights into her 23-year marriage to artist Graham Swift. She describes navigating ‘bumps in the road’ over more than three decades together, emphasizing that imperfections strengthen their bond.
Embracing Imperfections in Love
Beeny acknowledges the ups and downs, stating, ‘There have been bumps in the road in 34 years, it would have been so boring otherwise. It’s not been perfect all along, but what relationship is? That’s the truth of it. I’ve learned in life that if you don’t have the bad times, then you don’t appreciate the good times.’
Their four sons occasionally note, ‘You and Dad argue a lot.’ Beeny admits there are days when ‘I don’t fancy him and divorce seems like a good idea.’ Yet, moments later, they display affection, like holding hands in the garden, showing their enduring love. She views this authenticity as healthy for their children.
Overcoming Breast Cancer Together
The couple faced a major test when Beeny received a breast cancer diagnosis in August 2022. She endured chemotherapy and a double mastectomy, earning the all-clear in April 2023. Earlier comments about their marriage ‘hanging by a thread’ were meant as a joke, she clarifies.
In June 2024, Beeny released her documentary Sarah Beeny vs. Cancer, chronicling her journey through treatment and recovery.
Maintaining the Spark and Unique Traditions
Beeny and Swift met when she was 19 and he was 18, marrying in 2002. She stresses keeping the spark alive despite life’s demands, calling Swift her best friend. A playful tradition persists: they avoid saying ‘I love you,’ stemming from mocking friends who declared it early only to break up soon after.
‘To this day, we’ve never officially said it,’ Beeny shares. If Swift slips, she teases him, once backtracking after saying, ‘Even if you didn’t have any money or never got a job, I’d still love you,’ insisting it was just a figure of speech. She adds, ‘I’m married to my best friend. I don’t know what our secret is, but I think having a spark of the child in you helps.’
